Very Educational

I am a car lover and while I have done a lot of reading about working on cars, I do not have a lot of experience of actually working on them. I thought by the title of this book it might encourage me to actually do more work on my own. There really isn't any "step by step" instructions on how to do things in this book, but what you will find is lots of great information on all of the systems of the car. It is very well written with clear insights into how things work and what you can do to upgrade any part of the vehicle. This was absolutely the best book at explaining how a car works that I have ever read. If you are already an expert mechanic or engineer this book may not be for you but I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a better understanding of cars and how they work.

Mostly good for a new guy.

Good in most areas. Answered a lot of 'new guy' questions I had. A significant weakness is the sections on suspensions, transmissions and differentials. The book is lacking good illustrations for many of the subjects. In these areas there are page after page of verbal descriptions of complex and not intuitively obvious concepts and structures. The lack of illustrations means the reader is trying to figure out how certain things fit and function together but if you cannot make a mental picture of the part in question, because you've never seen anything like it, you'll be lost pretty quickly. Would be worth adding to a collection and re reading if you have others that are strong where this one is weak.
