About the Author

Maeve Binchy is the author of numerous best-selling books, including her most recent novels, Minding Frankie, Heart and Soul, and Whitethorn Woods, as well as Circle of Friends and Tara Road, which was an Oprah’s Book Club selection. She has written for Gourmet; O, The Oprah Magazine; Modern Maturity; and Good Housekeeping, among other publications. Married to Gordon Snell, she lived in Dalkey, Ireland, until her death in July 2012 at the age of seventy-two, shortly after finishing this book.

Maeve Binchy's books are like wrapping yourself in a duvet

I always fall into a book by Maeve Binchy like falling into a warm bed on
a snowy evening, enveloped in a gloriously cozy down duvet, the lamp on, a
warm drink to hand, ready to be swept away to a place of caring and compassion.

Her theme is always the same - people, confronted by difficulties in life, bad
luck or hard times, and how the choices they make lead to a better life, or one
that is (by their own actions) shut down and made smaller.

Ireland is not only the setting, it is also one of these characters - beautiful and
troubled, or glorious and hopeful; more likely all of these.

Maeve has died, and now that I have read this book, there is that sad realization
that there aren't going to be any new characters to meet - but I will be re-reading
all her books, including this one, which I think is one of the best.

If you are a fan of Maeve Binchy's works, you already know these characters, and
the plots. You know the place - only a small part of the book is set in Dublin; most
of it is in the West, in a village on the coast.

As usual, there are a mis-matched group of near-strangers, brought together for an arbitrary
occassion - this time it is the opening of a small inn - each with a life problem
that must be confronted (or, notably for one character, avoided) and how that
plays out.

The pleasure is in spending time with these people as they face up to their problems,
or fail to, and the understanding (and compassion) for people that Maeve always
shows.

Reading Binchy, I always feel more alive, more aware of other people, more as if I have had a glimpse
into their hearts and minds - and that is a great gift, what only the most profoundly
gifted authors, artists and composers ever achieve.

Binchy's works were, in her lifetime, so often dismissed as romances or women's lit -
I prefer to think of her as a reporter and journalist (as she was, and so was Dickens)
reporting on the heart and mind and soul of people in troubling times.

If you have read other books by Maeve Binchy, you don't need reviews to tell you why you
will love A Week in Winter. If you haven't, but read to understand people (and yourself)
and how relationships really work (or fail to), you will love this book!

Disappointedly Average

After reading other's reviews of this book, I looked forward to this book. Unfortunately, this book seemed very bland to me, though interesting enough for me to finish it. The story takes place primarily in Ireland. It begins by telling the reader about "Chicky", an interesting young woman who is surprised to find that she is pregnant. The story follows her adventures for awhile; time passes and we learn about her son, family and a few friends. Then, after the first few chapters, a number of chapters each focus on a different, character, each interesting enough. Most of them do not know each other. This book includes quite a cast - from ordinary people to soldiers during the war as well as Counts and Countesses. Periodically I felt more engaged with a particular person's story.
Eventually everything comes together to create the storyline. However, too many people are in this cast for my taste because it takes away from our really getting to know anyone well. For me, this book can't hold a candle to books by Anne Tyler - who writes so vividly that I really know and care about and become involved with each main character.

I love Binchy, but this one is a disappointment

Given Maeve Binchy's death last year, and this being her last work, I suppose anything negative will be damned by her readers, but....

If you like Maeve Binchy's books, you either adore them or can't stand them, and if you like one of them, you're more or less likely to like all of them.

There is a chronological development in her novels (in terms of time period) and I find that I have always in general liked the earlier ones better, if just because of the setting in time. Having said that, some of the later ones are terrific too.

However, the real differentiation, to me, in her novels is whether they are what I'll call the traditional novel form, where there's one story and the characters develop and you see this, or they are what I'll call the 'vignette' style.

In the latter, each chapter focuses on a different person, with something in common so that they're not just different short stories, and the context keeps them from being just short stories. The first one I read, "Lilac Bus", was about a van that took people from a village who had moved to Dublin to work, back to their village for weekends. Most of them knew each other, came from the same village and while it was the vignette style, it felt a bit more like a novel. But the common characteristic is that there isn't any real character development, as there's not time; she paints a picture of how everyone is. Many of her later novels of this type have less-connected characters, and this makes them seem less developed.

In general, I think her traditional novels are stronger works. The plot is developed, and you get to see her characters develop and change and they are more complex, and their relationships are more complex.

A Week in Winter is of the vignette style, and that would be OK, except that she tries to develop her characters in too short a time. There are too many "and suddenly some unexpected event occurs and in a moment relationships are changed and all is wonderful." It doesn't work - this one feels tossed off too quickly. Also, there are too many little contradictions, things that an editor should have caught. It's easy to breeze by a couple of them, but at some point they get distracting.

While Binchy is always comfortable, feel-good, escapist reading, and she's a little oversweet at times, and more so in Winter.

I don't know much anything about Binchy's death, and any illness, and maybe she just wasn't well enough to do her best work on this. Most of her readers are going to be glad to have had one more, because she's gone.

If you haven't read her before, read the earlier works; this isn't the book to judge her by.

Mr. Davis' book is a thorough and excellently written history of pesticides from the 1960's onwards. I don't want to repeat the reviews above, but suffice it to say the reviews are accurate and if readers would like to get an understanding of this area of the history of ecological and environmental protection in the US, this is an excellent start. Though clearly an academic work, Mr. Davis employs a style of writing that makes the book compelling to read to the commerical reader.

I found Forgiveness to be a beautiful book. A true love story between mother and daughter written by a caring and sensitive young woman. There are a lot of things I really loved in this book. Her deep expressions of love for her mom and the love she received in return, the entire beautifully expressed theme of forgiveness throughout. I greatly admire how she bravely writes about the molestation she suffered as a little girl. And I am convinced that the author did not cheat with her mother’s husband, an accusation she goes into painstaking detail to prove is false. There’s a lot more that I love, but I won’t mention those in specific detail as this review would go on forever. I will be mentioning spoilers, especially on things that I had a hard time understanding about this book, as well as information from Unbreakable, Jenni Rivera’s memoir. So now that I’ve given a spoiler warning, here ya go.

In the first pages of Forgiveness, there is a copy of one of the cards Jenni gave to her daughter on her 26th birthday. In it she writes “I know there are certain things you don’t understand about the woman that brought you into this world.” The author repeats this same idea a few times in the book, and it seems evident that this is often the case. I can only imagine how painful it might be to read your own mother’s memoir after she has died, but I really can’t help but think that perhaps if Chiquis did read it, she would have a much better understanding of the terrible traumas her mother survived and triumphed over, and how that made her who she was.

Here are the things that I had a hard time with about this book.

1) I was really surprised that the author never acknowledges that her mother was a victim, much less a survivor, of domestic violence. A 15 year-old girl thrown out of her parent’s home when a 21 year-old man commits statutory rape and impregnates her. Chiquis seems to refer to his violent abuse and her mother’s attempt at self-defense as their “fighting.” Perhaps recognizing this as abuse would help the author better understand the genesis of the anger and pain that her mom carried.

2) No acknowledgment of the emotional abuse caused to her mother by her mom’s second husband. While she mentions infidelity, she never mentions he cheated on her mom within months of her being raped at the hands of one of his enemies, after finding out the crushing news that her daughters and younger sister were sexually molested by her ex-husband, and within weeks of giving birth to his baby. He not only cheats, he emotionally abandons her. And their marriage ends because he’s unfaithful again after she’s forgiven him and taken him back. While the author explains well why she loves this man, it seems to me there’s denial about “stupid stuff” as she calls it at one point, when really it was painfully overwhelming stuff for her mother.

3) The author seems to show little understanding of the heartbreak and struggle in loving a man who choses his drugs over his love for you.

4) Admitting you’re addicted to spending money, and then qualifying it by saying “I truly felt the money belonged to me” as if that is justification to spend thousands of dollars on personal items on a company credit card. Not understanding how someone would be justifiably upset with that behavior for several reasons, from a place of integrity, fairness and concern.

5) Not believing your mom when she tells you it’s time to move out and be a grown up after she’s unfortunately had enough of this behavior, and instead accusing her of just being mean and vindictive because she didn’t like your boyfriend.

6) Blaming your mother’s husband by accusing him of having no character for not defending you when her mother has a right to take action of asking her to move out. A grown woman expecting her mother’s husband to defend her against his own wife?

7) Implying that your savvy mother is nothing more than a gossip when she tells you about your boyfriend’s reputation. A self-made woman who rose from poverty to the top of a male dominated genre on hard work, guts and instincts, she just listened to gossip? The woman who, as the author said herself, was always so protective, she’s not speaking from a place of concern? When the boyfriend defames Jenni and her stylist in public, you can’t help but think, hey maybe mom’s instincts about this guy were at least partly right. While she admits in much detail that it was a wrong thing to do, she ends up making the excuse that he was drunk. Okay, love the guy and forgive him for sure, but wow, a little expression of understanding of how horribly upsetting and painful something like that would be to one’s mom coulda been in order, especially given the mindset she had to be in at that point.

8) Worst theory ever - that somehow mom was motivated by jealousy. When I read what she wrote about her sister’s wedding, and her upset that her mom actually wanted to plan her second daughter’s wedding with her second daughter, I thought who is the jealous one here? At another event, when your mom has to tell you that you aren’t the star, is she talking from a place of ego, or is she addressing your sense of entitlement? The whole jealousy theory doesn’t float. It’s an unconvincing argument, especially when it seems pretty clear if you didn’t want to be in Jenni’s life on honest terms, she was happy to show you the door. Her producing a reality TV show centered around her daughter is another thing that squashes the jealousy theory. Feeling jealous is so different from feeling a lack of loyalty.

9) Having no understanding of the upset that comes when you discover your best friend has made a pass at your daughter. Sober or not, male or female, gay or straight, only a kiss, isn’t the point. It’s not silly and sweet, but a boundary that shouldn’t be crossed and a betrayal. It shows a complete lack of loyalty on the part of a best friend. Even if her mom jumped to the wrong conclusion about the full nature of their relationship, she had every right to be crazy upset. Without recognizing that and the hurt it triggered, you can’t understand all the profound confusion and sad stuff that followed.

10) When she thinks nothing of walking into her mother’s bedroom at 10 o’clock at night without knocking no less, and among other things, telling her mom she shouldn’t leave her marriage after her husband has betrayed her confidence and her trust. Something she labels “telling a stupid white lie.” What??? I’d have kicked his ass out and cut off his balls. (Wait…I think she kinda did that.) My heart really broke for the author at this point in her not realizing the fuel she was pouring on an already painfully volatile situation. Having to be told “our problems are between him and me, he shouldn’t be calling you to talk about anything,” um yeah. This sweet gal’s seeming lack of boundaries, expecting all of the men in your mother’s life to take your side against your own mother and thinking it okay that you be each other’s confidants. Not understanding your mom’s right to have her own feelings about inappropriate behaviors and being justifiably upset.

I’m not at all justifying being wrongly accused… but I believe when you take all of the above into consideration, the leap doesn’t seem that huge. Whether you believe Jenni had a right to the deep pain she was in, she was in deep pain. Trust had been broken, and the sad truth is that all three people involved earned that distrust as far as Jenni was concerned, even if they couldn’t see it, and no matter how unintentional it was.

After Jenni’s horrific plane crash, I find this book really gets back on track as a mother/daughter love story, a beautiful and heartbreaking tale. How she fought to lay her mother to rest with a sense of wholeness is devastating to read, and demonstrates the excruciating pain and suffering experienced by a wonderful daughter whose mother is the love of her life. How she seeks out her mother’s friend Vanessa and starts to realize the unrelenting stress and pain her mother was experiencing, and had experienced long before the break with her daughter, offers compassion, understanding and closure. That the author can see that her mother was fighting once again… this time fighting through the darkness to get back to the daughter she loved so dearly, is the triumphant moment of this love story. It’s not only the fact that she would have taken responsibility for an untrue and unjust accusation, but even if it were true, she would offer her daughter the most powerful example of the theme of this book - forgiveness.

Spread knowledge! Even about farts!

I really like this book. It's a cool reference guide as a coffee table book, use as bathroom reader or a coversation starter. Thompson compiled some fun and interesting questions. Questions that might make the reader think, "I've never thought about that before."
Despite the title of the book, not all the questions are silly.Thompson choose a bevy of questions having to do with science, history and theory. Questions such as why a chameleon changes color, how do bees navigate, what are the origins of the English language, or did the lost city of Atlantis exist. The answers are short, precise and detailed. Definitely enough information to satisfy an answer.
I think my favorite question in the entire book is What is the origin of "Son of a Gun?" So often do we come upon colloquialisms and idioms that are used frequently and we don't give any thought into where they came from. Thompson not only has an answer, but continued the section by taking about the multiple sources from where the phrase orginated and how it has come to be used currently.
As informative as his book is, it's easily digestible. I'm going pass this book off to a niece or nephew and tell them to learn some facts to pass on to their friends. Spread the knowledge!

This book is SO much fun! It provides the answers to so many questions that are fun, interesting, and occasionally- historical! The outline of the book is fairly simple. The question (sometimes silly, sometimes intriguing) is posed as a heading, and then there is a quick but detailed answer. These answers are a few paragraphs to a little over a page. The answers are concise but completely filled with great information. The title of the book suggests that all the questions might be crude or overly silly, but that’s not it at all! Although some of the questions are silly (for example besides the title, “why don’t birds fall off branches when they’re asleep” or “why do dogs have wet noses”), there are so many more kinds of questions in this book! Some of them are vaguely scientific (such as, “what causes Parkinson’s Disease” or “how does general anesthesia work”), while others are historical (such as, “how did Mother’s Day originate”). Although they are so different, all these questions are really interesting, with compelling answers and well-researched responses. I really enjoy this book. I expect it’s usually used as a “bathroom reader” but I read it all in one sitting! It’s so much fun, and I learned a lot!

As my age increases I've been finding myself spending more and more time in the 'home office.' As such my needs for enjoyable, but appropriate, literature has also increased. I look for books that contain cool facts, hard questions, and a condensed easy to read form. Enter "Can Holding in a Fart Kill You?" This book is absolutely jam packed with intriguing questions or musings on life such as 'What does Trainspotting Involve?' (What is trainspotting?) and 'Why is the Empire State Building Famous?' (Because it's big?).

Each question is given 3-6 paragraphs of detailed information which not only answers the questions but expands it to larger concepts and ideas that can help !you! in life. But really, this book is hard to put down and is full of fun information which is presented in a concise and clear manner which I enjoyed reading. Heck, sometimes I even find myself taking it to the work home office for my afternoon reading pleasure.

Auf deutscher Seite galten Firma und Familie Krupp als vorbildlich und patriotisch, auf der Seite der Gegner als Verkörperung von Hochmut und Angriffsgeist.
Firma und Familie haftete ein „Krupp-Mythos“ an, der unter anderem dazu führte, dass nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg der Inhaber der Firma, Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach stellvertretend für seinen Vater in den Nürnberger Kriegsverbrecherprozessen zu Enteignung und Festungshaft verurteilt wurde, ein Urteil, das obwohl wenige Jahre später aufgehoben, von bemerkenswerter Härte war. Dieses Urteil drückt klar die Überzeugung aus, dass die Industrie, insbesondere die Rüstungsindustrie, einen Teil der Schuld sowohl am Regime als auch am Zweiten Weltkrieg trage. Die Theorien, welche die Industrie und Krupp als Steigbügelhalter Hitlers darzustellen versuchten, wurden nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg weiter gesponnen und trieben ihre wohl farbenprächtigsten Blüten in den Werken William Manchesters, bis sie vor nicht allzu langer Zeit wissenschaftlich wiederlegt wurden. Firma und Familie Krupp haften wohl aufgrund ihrer wechselhaften Geschichte ein Mythos an, der einige Autoren in der Krupp- Dynastie gar nach den Wurzeln des deutschen Nationalcharakters suchen lässt. Einen ersten Anstoß in diese Richtung liefert Werner Abelshauser, der durch seine Fragestellung „Krupp-Rüstungsschmiede der Nation?“ darauf hinweist, dass bei genauer Betrachtung des vorhandenen Zahlenmaterials zu Umfang und prozentualem Anteil der im Hause Krupp erzeugten Rüstungsgüter das überlieferte Bild zumindest fraglich wird.

Cogent and readable!

Kirkland’s writing guide is an excellent primer on the art of constructing persuasive argument. Concise and unambiguous (and a little cheeky), the text will serve as an excellent reference for both academics and business professionals. Accessible from the outset, Kirkland’s instruction on basic mechanics and reliance on simple mnemonics create a valuable read for anyone looking to improve their written advocacy. As a professor who heavily works in debate and argumentation, I strongly recommend it.
