Intelligence veteran Mark M. Lowenthal details how the intelligence community's history, structure, procedures, and functions affect policy decisions. With straightforward and friendly prose, the book demystifies a complex process. The fifth edition highlights crucial developments and new challenges in the intelligence community, including: changes in the management of U.S. intelligence and the fourth DNI in five years; Obama administration policies; developments in collection and analysis; the killing of Bin Laden, Wikileaks, and updates on Russia, North Korea, China, and the Middle East; the ability to handle the shift from large-scale attacks to smaller, individual attempts; and, expanded coverage of foreign intelligence services and new coverage of intelligence in authoritarian regimes.

Review
"Intelligence: From Secrets to Policy remains the best available introduction to the U.S. intelligence community and what it does. Clearly written, comprehensive, and critical when it should be, it offers students and interested citizens a holistic understanding of how specialized components and discrete missions contribute to a multifaceted enterprise designed to ensure that U.S. officials obtain the information and insights they need to make decisions affecting the security of our nation." --Thomas Fingar, Oksenberg-Rohlen Distinguished Fellow at Stanford University and former Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Analysis

"This is the fifth edition of Mark Lowenthal's treatise (modestly described by him as an 'introductory text'--it is that but it is much more) on national security intelligence. It is lucid, comprehensive, critical where it needs to be, up to date almost to the minute, and in short an invaluable resource for anyone concerned with the subject of intelligence. It makes a bureaucratically, historically, and analytically complex subject intelligible. I know of no comparable work on intelligence." --Richard A. Posner, Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit; author of Uncertain Shield

"Mark Lowenthal's Intelligence is the classic textbook on the subject. But it is more than that and, especially in the new edition, its insight, clarity, and wisdom makes it invaluable to any student, scholar, or member of the concerned public." --Robert Jervis, Columbia University

The only primer available in English
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
I am an intelligence professional and I know both the author and the subject of this book intimately. Dr. Lowenthal's book represents the *only* available "primer" on intelligence that can be understood by Presidents, Congressmen, the media, and the public.

Dr. Lowenthal's book focuses on the U.S. Intelligence Community itself--the good, the bad, and the ugly. He is strongest on analysis and the politics of intelligence, somewhat weaker on collection and counterintelligence covert action. There is no other book that meets the need for this particular primer, and so I recommend it with enthusiasm.

If you do not like the book, you definitely should not consider a career in intelligence.

All of my books are available here at Amazon and also free online at Phi Beta Iota the Public Intelligence Blog. Below are ten books I specifically recommend along with this one. Outstanding
By Danny L. Thoms Jr.
I purchased the book for a graduate class, this fall. I was actually surprised at the content; based on prior readings of intelligence affairs they lacked the changes since the September eleventh attacks. The author takes a broad look at the theater and sets the pace for the remaining chapters. The book is well written and very informative on present relationships and laws within the intelligence community and their clients.

Informative read
By Bella
The information is useful for someone who wants to learn more about the intelligence community. However, the book could have easily been condensed and would be more functional if the same themes were not reiterated in every single chapter. Each section contains relevant information, which can be located if you are willing to skim past the redundant fluff language. If you know nothing about IC, then I would recommend this book, but I did not give it a higher rating because I think it would have been helpful to have a book with this type of content organized in a way that readers could look-up or locate specific information without having to read through the whole thing like a novel.
