It was very important for me to realize that there was a difference between my intuitive sense of what Jesus taught and the official image. This opened up a very healing perspective, namely that when the official image contradicted my inner feeling, it might indeed be the official image that was out of touch with reality. To me, this is the difference between those who might benefit from this book and those who will reject it without giving it a closer look. In today’s world, many people have a strong intuitive sense of spiritual principles and many have indeed been disappointed by official Christianity. Many spiritually minded people have rejected Christianity and have consequently rejected Jesus as well―for how do you separate Christ from Christianity? What dawned on me was that Jesus is too significant of a figure in the spiritual life of earth for me to reject him based on a man-made religion. I realized that I could not let the doctrines and actions of Christian churches stand between me and Jesus. I wanted to know Jesus as he really is, not as he has been portrayed by an organization that was too often guided by political motives and expediency. As Jesus himself said: “ask, and ye shall receive.” When I started asking for answers, I found material that helped me gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the timeless teachings of Christ. This helped me answer what was for me the greatest question about Jesus, namely why he had suddenly disappeared from the earth 2,000 years ago. I had no problem accepting that Jesus had ascended to the spiritual realm and was still alive there as a spiritual being. Yet why wouldn’t he seek to guide us from that position, especially given that he himself had made the promise that he would be with us always? I simply couldn’t see Jesus being with us in the official churches so how did he intend to fulfill this promise? I gradually came to understand that Jesus is indeed with us today and that he has attempted to give us guidance many times over the past 2,000 years. I also saw that because Jesus is now an ascended being, this guidance must be given according to the overall law that determines life on earth, namely the Law of Free Will. The earth is a kind of experience machine in which we human beings are allowed to have certain experiences until we tire of them and decide that we want more.

If you consider yourself spiritual and accept the idea of progressive revelation, this is the next book you need to read. For followers of Jesus it’s as essential as the Four Gospels, a further step in a sincere, growing relationship with him. It reveals much more about his personality, attitudes, and spiritual knowledge than does the New Testament. The reason for that is simple, as Jesus notes in the book: “My teachings were adapted to the level of consciousness that people had 2,000 years ago." Humankind has evolved—somewhat—since then, and Jesus can now give us truths the crowds in Palestine couldn’t have grasped.
Even today, many spiritually minded people fear they will anger God if they explore ideas not printed in the books they have been told are holy. However, history shows us it was mortal beings who decided which texts were sacred, and their motives weren’t always the highest. Is it likely that God would give us inquiring minds and then take offense if we use them? We watch our children grow and we delight in their every development—is God likely to be incapable of that?
If you open the book and start to read, and if you keep reading when you encounter a thought that you suspect organized religion wouldn’t approve, you will come to a point where Jesus says this: “If you are reading this, you belong to a group of people who have the true teachings of Jesus Christ written in their beings.” That’s the moment when you may realize, like Saul of Tarsus, that you’ve made a connection—no, a reconnection—with the divine. Absolutely The Best Spiritual Guide EVER

Where to start! I found this book and the website in March 2014. It has changed my life. It is, quite simply, the message of hope that Jesus intend us to know. I am a cradle catholic turned catholic student (primary, secondary and college, omg!) turned recovering catholic turned spiritual seeker. I am so relieved and so grateful that I was guided to this book and website, and I can't wait to read the other books. This is the real thing - I have found a guide to living well and in spiritual harmony with myself, and the planet. I now know where I came from and where I'm going, and how to get there. And believe me, I've done my research - countless books over the past 40 years. As the other reviewer said, read these words with an open mind, and I would add, with your intuitive sense to "know" that this is the Truth.

This book is eye opening, transformative, extremely insightful and logical! It's also challenging for those who have grown to hold on to certain beliefs about Jesus and his teachings. I say we take it on with an open heart and mind. We just may see some validity in it.

Gross was faced with a tough task when asked to edit this volume: how to cram the history of a form that is so flexible, and so widely used, into a compact volume? Essays have been selected from the seventeenth century on, and Gross has included writers from the USA as well as Britain. Almost his only concession has been the exclusion of any writer born after WW2. Plagued by so much choice, he has done a great job. Of course, there are omissions. Several writers from 'The New Yorker' have their say, but there was no room for its two best essayists, A. J. Liebling and Joseph Mitchell. And the abscence of Kenneth Tynan is lamentable: his essay on the folly of the Lord Chamberlin, the Censor of Pays in Britain, is far better than that of Joseph Conrad, a brilliant novelist but an undistiunguished essayist, which is included here. But everyone will find a few favourites missing in any book of this kind. In fact, Gross has sometimes tried to be too representative, to include too many discrete essays, with the result that he seems to have plumped for very short pieces. Perhaps half a dozen writers seem to have been included simply because they are or were great writers, and not because they wrote great essays. Others are represented by inferior pieces, largely for reasons of space -- space often taken up by lesser writers. E.B. White, for instance, gets just over two pages for a pretty run-of-the-mill essay, where he would be better served by 'Death of a Pig' or 'Farewell, my lovely!', both of which are far better than, say, anything by Joseph Epstein. And John Updike's 'The Bankrupt Man' hardly gives an idea of what he's capable of. But these are minor quibbles. Anyone who enjoys reading essays will find countless hours of enjoyment in this book: essays by Samuel Johnson, Walter Bagehot, G. K. Chesterton, Max Beerbohm, John Jay Chapman, and many others, are classics that repay many re-readings.

Painstakingly Detailed, Clear and Comprehensive

This is a detailed social history of the USA and Canada how the two countries are related by people and custom. There are many, many examples provided throughout the book of the countries customs, backgrounds, and religions. Beginning at the settlement of the colonies in the New World and proceeding to modern times this is detailed history. If you are a history buff you will enjoy reading this; if you were hoping for an brief, anecdotal history of the likes and differences between the USA and Canada explaining the causative factors you be overwhelmed.

I am 2/3s thru the book and it has not disappointed. It is historically definitive and comes back again and again to the underlying conceptions and misconceptions that have characterized the relations between the two countries. It is a book worthy of the title and subject and what drew me to buy the book in the first place. As a citizen of both countries I have observed over half a century of the complex themes that professor Bothwell points out and I think he has it just about right.

These recent headlines in the Wall Street Journal highlight the on-going problem of leaders who have “gone south” and have taken their organizations with them. Stanford business school professor Jeffrey Pfeffer would use these as examples of how “the leadership industry has failed.” Prescriptions for leaders to be more truthful are at odds with what goes on in the real world. “The ability to lie can be very useful for getting ahead,” says Pfeffer. “Manipulation is a foundation for social power…in fact; there is a reciprocal relationship between power and lying.”

That brings us to Bill George’s latest book, “Discover Your True North: Expanded and Updated.” In it, George brings his wisdom, observations, examples, and practices to bear on helping leaders be something more than what Pfeffer proposes. He encourages us to build on our natural leadership gifts and to stay on our “True North” track to inspire and empower others to excellence. According to George, our “True North” is the internal compass which, based on deeply held beliefs, values, and principles, “represents who we are at our deepest level.” Knowing our internal compass helps when pressures and seductions detour us from achieving our purpose in life. It is our lifesaver… alerting us to get back on track when the life being lived is not aligned with who we are at the deepest level.

George’s “True North” needs some reconciling to Pfeffer’s belief about the reality of leadership. Pfeffer talks about power for the sake of power while George talks about power that flows from character. This disconnect may be attributed to the lack of good role models for those seeking to be leaders. I have observed over the years that leadership training if not reinforced by good role models does not lead to “True North” leadership. It is hard work to develop the type of leader George talks about. It is “The Road Less Traveled” due to the required investment of time by both the student and the role model.

For this reason, I recommend “Discovering Your True North” but with the caveat that it is reinforced by a role model. This may be satisfied with George’s concept of a “support team” that he details in the book. I have worked with Bill George and can vouch that he is the real thing. I am sure that he provides the modeling needed to those he touches in the class room and for those he works with in his consultancy.

In brief about this updated edition - George revisits his NYC Times best-seller and now business classic that was released in 2007. He integrates his personal insights gained as CEO of Medtronic and as a professor and Senior Fellow at Harvard Business School with new first-person interviews of 48 “authentic global leaders.” These leaders include many who have garnered the positive attention of the press and have inspired and empowered millions to excellence –Indra Nooyi, Jack Ma, Alan Mulally, John Mackey, Sheryl Sandberg, Michael Bloomberg, and many others. He also includes updates on the original 125 participants featured in his first book and includes a chapter on finding your “GQ,” your global quotient.

George also includes case studies of those who were seduced and made bad choices which led to painful detours in their lives – Rajat Gupta (insider trading), Lance Armstrong (fraud and demonization of those who tried to get the truth known), and Michael Baker (fraud). It is early but we all may have something to learn from what appears to be a scandal of major proportions at Theranos. Did Elizabeth Holmes take time to find her “True North”? Did she take a detour? Will Theranos survive? For her, this book may be too late.

Those who read the first book will find this to be just as inspiring. For those who missed the first book, they will find this to be a treasure and regret they missed the 2007 edition.

This is the most robust and practical leadership book everyone should read. A must read for all leaders. Corporate CEOs and leaders at all levels - myself included- have been inspired by the works of Bill George. Get ready for a life- changing experience.

In "Discover your true north", Bill shares his remarkable insights and wisdom that can be applied to reach our full potential and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

This book should be a required reading for an MBA curriculum. This is is one of the few books that I would keep on my desk. This will remind me every morning to read a chapter and think about Bill's theories that can be applied to my challenges that I face at all walks of my life (work, home, social etc.).

Using this book you can discover your true north (your internal compass) that guides you successfully throughout your life as a leader and human being.

Throughout "Discover Your True North", successful individuals discuss how they became authentic leaders.  For you, the reader, this book provides an opportunity to learn from authentic leaders and to create your own development plan to become an authentic leader. It includes five areas of your development as a leader:

Bill George takes us even further than he has before in what it takes to be a good leader in the 21st century. Building off his previously successful books, "Authentic Leadership" and "True North," Bill goes deeper and farther leveraging insights from dozens of global leaders, each with a compelling story.
Bill redefines one's True North, showing the critical differences between leaders in the last century and now. Everyone has a life story, but successful leaders reflect on their stories and reframe them to learn and grow, especially from their crucible experiences. Bill provides a graphic compass for your True North journey composed of one's values and principles (north), sweet spot (east), support team (south), and integrated life (west) to arrive at one's center of self-awareness. It's a simple and powerful graphic.
One's self awareness derives from one's story, including sometimes losing your way and the crucibles encountered, and progressing through introspection and honest feedback to self-compassion, self-acceptance, and self-actualization. Another powerful graphic.
Healing through vulnerability is a critical concept. If one is open and vulnerable to others, then how can others do something to you that you haven't already revealed? In such vulnerability, there is power. Power, not to dominate, but power to build relationships. Beautifully described.
All this is not soft, sappy stuff because organizations led this way are mission driven and values-centered. They engage people unleashing innovation and superior service which delights customers, grows revenue and profits, and enhances the shareholder value. It's not only the right thing to do, but it pays off financially. Again beautifully described.
