Great book, but the other book of the same author is much better

This is a very high quality book, chock a block full of information about construction sites, with lots of imaginative flaps, things that swivel, move, and fold. HOWEVER...it is not as good as "The Ultimate Book of Vehicles" by the same author. The "Vehicles" book is more appropriate for kids 3 years and up: It is still full of awesome flaps, swivels, and things that move, but it is simpler, with pictures of the vehicle, the name of the vehicle, and maybe a few names of the parts of the vehicle. You open up a flap to see inside, make it move, etc. My son found it very interesting.

The "Construction" is really aimed for older kids, I'm guessing 5 and up, maybe even older. There are just so many words on the page, and so much information. The flaps are not as interesting as the previous book, and I found many of the moving parts to be "sticky", and my 3 year old ripped quite a few out within a week of reading the book. We have not ripped anything from the "Vehicle" book.

So I would say if you have an older kid who wants to gain a lot of knowledge about construction sites, this book is for you. But if you have a younger child (3 and up, any younger and they'd destroy the book), get the "Vehicle" book.

Fantastic For The Young Construction Enthusiast

My two and a half year old grandson LOVES this book. He will sit quietly on his own looking through it, and carefully manipulating the multitude of moving parts (articulating boom arms, elevators to lift concrete buckets and move drivers into lifts, etc.). We read it together first, and set the groundless for how gentle he would need to be if he wanted the book to stay fun with all of its moving parts, and though he isn't particularly gentle with other toys (he loves to pretend monster trucks and elephants are stomping other things), he hasn't damaged any part of this book. I also highly recommend The Ultimate Vehicle Book (I think that's the name of it) by the same author.

UPDATE! My son tells me that the book has suffered some damage from unattended careless use at his house. I have the Ultimate Vehicle Book at my house, while they have the Ultimate Construction Book at their house. My grandson is careful with the book here, but I suspect there he gets a bit wilder. My son suggests the book is best for an older child. I'd say its a delight for a child to read with an adult or under your supervision/with assistance.

Irritating grammar errors but the kids love the moving parts

My boys, 5 and nearly 3, love this book! It's got lots of fun parts to open, unfold and generally move. What bothers me is the multiple grammar errors ("its" versus "it's," come on editors!) and poorly worded sentences. Did no one give this a once-over before printing?! Also, at least one of the flaps has the words printed upside-down, and I've only read two pages of the book, so who knows what other surprises abound. Shoddy work, but my kids have yet to notice.

The cd has Yuji Sekiguchi performing the same pieces from the book, as a kind of audio sampler. Brides of Falconfell is a good Gothic read

If you love Victoria Holt, Jane Aiken Hodge, Phyllis Whitney, and others of the Gothic genre...you will really enjoy Brides of Falconfell. It is a well written mystery that kept me guessing until the end of the book. It's all there...the spooky castle, mysterious deaths, and plenty of odd characters. Having said that, the reason for a 4 and not a 5 is that I felt Serena was way too self-deprecating for a woman who was depicted as being strong and capable. Other than that, it really is an enjoyable read.

I loved Thayn! I loved Serena! This a wonderful little regency romance about a spinster (still in her twenties) who goes to help the unattainable man she she fell in love with her first season. I enjoyed this so much I am looking at her other books.

A Gothic/Regency romance to enjoy

Blair Bancroft is an accomplished writer, who can adopt different styles, which makes her books really interesting. The intro to this book explains the style-first person, à la most Gothic novels. Think "Rebecca", "Jane Eyre" etc.
The heroine grew on me, as did the hero. The plot is not terribly complicated intellectually-which means that the reader needs to get hooked into the emotions of the characters. For me that was accomplished. I swore I would read only the first couple of chapters the night I bought this, and came to about 2 hours later having gone considerably further. I found myself thinking of the book during the day, and remembering certain passages with pleasure. Not many authors can do that for me.
Not every book needs to be "AWESOME" to give pleasure. There may be readers for whom this is a ho-hum read thinking that the plot isn't anything new. I found that to be just fine-I could enjoy the perils and the pleasures of the ride, and appreciate the skill with which the story is told.
