About the Author
James Herriot (1916-1995) was the bestselling author of memoirs including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing. At age 23, Herriot qualified for veterinary practice with the Glasgow Veterinary College, and moved to the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire to work in a rural practice. He would live in, work in, and write about the region for the rest of his life. Though he dreamed for years of writing a book, his veterinary work and his family kept him busy, and he did not start writing until the age of 50. In 1979, he was awarded the title Order of the British Empire (OBE). His veterinary practice in Yorkshire, England, is now tended by his son, Jim Wight.

All Creatures Great and Small

I want to warn all Herriot devotees that in buying the omnibus editions they are NOT getting all the stories! For example in Jim's courtship of Helen, the episode of the Daffodil Ball is omitted. Let me demonstrate. 'In Let Sleeping Vets Lie' chapter twenty three begins:

"After the night of the Daffodil Ball I just seemed to drift naturally into the habit of dropping in to see Helen on an occasional evening."

However in the omnibus edition we have:

"After the night at the cinema with Helen I just seemed to drift naturally into the habit of dropping in to see Helen on an occasional evening"

How dare they do this? I am extremely annoyed to have spent my money on these omnibus editions. I will now have to go to all lengths to get the original books which Amazon will not ship to New Zealand.

The American publishers think they know better than James Herriot how his stories should unfold. They are wrong.

Just as wonderful as ever

This story is aging nicely. I read it again recently, many many years after reading it as a teen, and its charm is undiminished. Gentle, noble, gory and yucky in spots, displaying a deep love for the area and its people, and even including a sweet love story, this tale of a young veterinarian starting out in Yorkshire, England in the 1930's is well worth a read.

One of the best books I've read in my life. A must read. Very well written. Makes you want to write like him.

I remember seeing my high school biology teacher reading this book at her desk while she had some time to herself, while we did our thing with dissections, etc. It seemed that she couldn't get her hands off this book. And I'd wonder what the book was about. Something about creatures. Maybe it was about GOD and church and religion.

Now that I've had a chance to read this book, twenty years later, I can say that it is a wonderful book! You don't want this book to end. And now I understand why my biology teacher was so hooked on it.

This is a nonfictional book about an English veterinarian writing about his funny and sometimes dramatic profession. From how he started, to his everyday events in a small town (away from the big city such as London) to how he meets his future wife, and his gradual establishment of his veterinary life. This book is filled with funny moments that makes you pause with a smile on your face. And has its poignant moments that makes you realize its wonderful writing.

This book gives you a glimpse of what the veterinary world is like on his side, on the countryside of life, with real people and real stories, and of course, with real animals. Animals and people and veterinary work that you will come to love.

My god I love this book.

I've just finished reading it for the third time. It had been long enough since my last reading that I'd forgotten enough for it to be fun. I've been reading science fiction since Tom Swift when I was 14... Hmmm... 47 years ago, and Peter F. Hamilton is one of my favorite authors of all that time.
THIS marvelous and unhurried piece of storytelling is the Hamilton book I tell people to read first when they are getting into Hamilton. If you're wondering whether you should... the answer is almost certainly... Yeah.

Rich kid on distant planet gives up life of plenty to be a soldier and find advanced alien life and then back, help of alien

I love good science fiction. Peter F. Hamilton has wrote a very good book Fallen Dragon. Its kind of long at 630 pages. Its a good read,well written with super great description of advanced worlds, biotec "Skin" suits for soldiers, super advanced software and civilians on distant worlds in a few hundred years from now. Great character development.

I liked that some of the things Hamilton wrote about still had parts rooted to our time, like the distant parts of Scotland and other parts of Earth. Advanced but the reader is still able to relate to it. Also I liked that Hamilton did not go into weird religions and other slow moving parts that sometimes slow the reading down and are not really related to the main part of the book.

Hamilton does a good job connecting parts of the story together. We see Lawrence a kid of rich privilege on a distance world secretly longing to explore deep space and advanced civilizations. Problem is there is less and less explorations as money is tight and the star ships available are now mainly being used to bring back anything of value from known colonized worlds to the shareholders of the companies. Lawrence finds his true love and sex with a girl only to find out his rich politician father hired the "low income family girl" to have sex with his son. However the girl does love Lawrence. Lawrence finds out and gives up his rich life and becomes a "skin suit" soldier for the company taking things of value back to Earth.

We see great battle scenes where the "skin suit" can give the wearer extra strength, stamina, help give medicines internally, molds to the body and more. The perfect fighting machine. Lawrence makes Sergent and has twenty years in before discovering a super advanced alien creature/egg partially disabled and only having some of its advanced memory. Lawrence and some of his men with the help of super advanced "prime" software that can defeat the best software of the company ,skyjacks a gigantic star ship and goes to Aldebaran, a giant red star with the living alien/egg Dragon. There they met other Dragon creatures who's existance is for the accumulation of knowledge.

I won't ruin the ending for you. A very good ending.

Here was a good sci fi book that flows well, action packed, has techology and description readers can relate to certain aspects of today and is not slowed down by obscure religions, sects and other things difficult to relate to. A book the reader will enjoy reading. It may take a few days as the book is kind of long but worth the read. 4 1/3 stars. I liked the book so much I bought two other sci fi books by Peter F. Hamilton and will review.

Over the years, I've read an enormous amount of science fiction. I've read all of the classics, as well as a goodly number of the more recent works. Having read just about everything he has written, I can safely say that Peter Hamilton is now my favorite science fiction writer.

My first exposure to Hamilton was his magnum opus, Night's Dawn trilogy. Initially, I was absolutely blown away. About midway through this 3,500 page door stop, I began to lose interest, primarily because the novelty of many of Hamilton's brilliant alien and technological constructs simply became second nature. I followed up with Pandora's Star and Judas Unchained, another 2,000 page monster. Much like Night's Dawn, it simply carried on too long. The Void trilogy, actually a sequel to Judas Unchained, was another 2,000+ pages, but actually kept my attention throughout.

Fallen Dragon contains the same style of writing as the works referenced above, but is more tightly written and concludes in a brief (for Hamilton) 850 pages. As in his previous work, the alien life forms and the technology envisioned by Hamilton are magnificently presented. There are none of the clichés found in other, far simpler writing. In addition, Hamilton's stories contain a healthy dose of philosophy, but not to the extent found in the far denser writing of Frank Herbert or Charles Strauss. The plot twist that occurs at the end of this book is awesome and immensely satisfying.

If you are considering sampling Hamilton, this would be the perfect place to start. Unless I'm mistaken, you'll proceed on to some of his lengthier space operas. If nothing else, reading Hamilton will keep you occupied and entertained for months on end.

Where it started

This (as far as I know) is the first book to use the term permaculture, first published in 1978, and which has led to a vast array of books expounding on the theory and application of the concept. Mollison and Holmgren define permaculture on page 1 of this book as "an integrated, evolving system of perennial or self-perpetuating plant and animal species useful to man". They go on, through this book, to lay out the basics of the concept, qualifying their definition and expanding on this particular brand of sustainable living. It is inspiring, and practical, and it is easy to see why it has inspired so many other practitioners and authors.

This work is probably not necessary unless you are interested in the history of the concept though. I haven't compared every single picture, but it looks like most of the information in here is repeated in Mollison's follow-on Permaculture: A Designers' Manual, and the vast majority is repeated in the cheaper Introduction to Permaculture. If you are interested in the concept, great, and start with the Introduction to Permaculture. For more pictures and examples of how these concepts work in real life, check out Restoration Agriculture or The Resilient Farm and Homestead. If you decide to get the permaculture certificate, you'll need Permaculture: A Designers' Manual since that's the textbook for the course.

Great info, just repeated and expanded upon in later works, now mostly interesting for historical reasons. Save your money and pass on this one.

This is the first of two Tanner's Ford books set in 1988, featuring great-grandchildren of those in the Bride Train series. Times have changed, but life in the valley holds many of the same characteristics. A highway came through in the 1970s, bypassing the town and creating a shiny new one, named Climax.

Men are still demanding and commanding, and their women still stand up to them. It's common for two men to share a wife, especially on the original 9 ranches. The MacDougal twins, Simon and Lance, are stuck with the same dilemma as in 1871 -- without a son, their ranch may pass to the Texas branch of the family.  They've pretty much given up on finding a woman until Simon breaks his leg and gets a full-leg cast. Unable to work or take care of himself, he needs a keeper.

As with many families, some members insist on "helping" their relatives. Brenda Gibson Anderson, head nurse at the Climax medical clinic, eagerly helps arrange for visitor Marci Meshevski to enjoy her new widowhood after too many years with a controlling, nasty excuse of a man. Since Simon needs help to get in and out of bed and more, and Nikki wants to discover all about the advantages of a  good man or two, why not hook them up together?

The fictional town of Tanner's Ford is located in a valley running from northwest downhill to southeast, with the town to the east. The setting is based on Montana's Big Hole Valley.
Tanner's Ford Valley, north of the river, west to east:
The Bitterroot Ranch (using the RB brand) is run by Ranger Elliott, his twin Ben, and younger brother, Patrick. Florence is Ben's wife (A Convenient Husband, Bride Train #4).
The Rocking E is one of the two original ranches, established in the late 1840s. Trace Elliott married Beth, and shares the ranch with his younger twin brothers, Simon and Jack (Barefoot Bride for Three, Bride Train #1).
The Circle C ranch is owned by a trio of battered veterans, Luke Frost, Gabe Downey, and Oscar (Oz) Cutler. Luke marries Sarah in Beauty and the Beasts, Bride Train #6.
The last ranch on the north with the Flying X brand, known as the Sweetwater Ranch, is owned by Cole Taylor, Byron Ashcroft, and Marshall Stevens, three  bachelors from the South. In Southern Seduction, Bride Train #8, they get more than they expected when they hire a cook.
Pinkerton agents Max, Sam, and Joshua Gibson purchase a ranch east of town with Sophie McLeod

South of the river, west to east:
The MD Connected was the second original ranch, also established in the late 1840s. Gillis MacDougal is the ramrod and shares the ranch with his two half-brothers, Ross and Nevin. Amelia married Ross in A Contract Bride's Triple Surprise, Bride Train #2.
Kenrick (Ace) Langford, Charles (Sin) Statham, and Henry Bennett are English aristocrats who won the Double D ranch from fellow Englishman Frederick Smythe in a card game. Jessie Elliott married Ace in Compromised Cowgirl, Bride Train #3.
Cousins Jed Adams, Riley Jansen, and Clint Fortune own the J Bar C (J-C). Jed married Victoria twice in 1 Bed, 2 Weddings, 3 Husbands, Bride Train #5.
Walt Chamberlain owned the Running W ranch, but in The Badger City Gang, Bride Train #7, he gifts it to Zach, Dusty, and Roy McInnes after Zach insists on marrying Kate Mason, the woman he took from the bride train. The McInnes men then discover she is Walt's daughter.
To the east of town, on the road to Bannack City, is a ranch which was owned by Mayor Orville Rivers, shot by the twelve-year-old boy Casey Wright in The Badger City Gang.

I had my doubts starting this book. I loved all of the other books in this series so I decided to chance it. So glad I did and can not wait for some more. The men are still just as hot and demanding of their women.

Marci escaped a bad marriage when her husband perished in a house fire, leaving her a widow, and she went to live with her sister, the only family she had left. Simon's full leg cast and Marci's sister's idea to put her bad marriage behind her, see her moving in with Simon while he needs the extra help, at least until his brother Lance returns. Each of the characters have multiple things going on here and it was woven together so nicely. I liked the amount of trust Marci but in Simon and Lance, nearly from the beginning. Lance's spiritual connection with Simon, his ravens and Marci was awesome and I really thought it deepened his character. I look forward to more stories from this series!

Take a woman who has been denied a lot of things in her life and set her up with a man in a full leg cast and what do you get? A lot of fun! Marci is starting to live after losing everything in a fire, including an abusive husband! Simon and his twin Lance are looking for a wife – they are in desperate need of a son so that they don’t lose ownership of their ranch thanks to an ancestor. Put the three of them together and things just might work out.

I loved how Marci wasn’t afraid to go after what she wanted. She was denied so many things when she was married; I was surprised that she was able to voice those needs. Simon and his personality won her over though…that and his family with roots, which is what Marci is really wanting. Their dynamic together…in and out of the bedroom or kitchen table…kept me reading just one more page! Lance is the more dominant brother and he sure did let Marci know it as soon as he walked into the house. Their dynamic is different but I really enjoyed it, was actually wishing for more of the two of them!

A very good book, one that you don’t necessarily need to read the previous series to understand, which is fantastic. However, now I need to finish reading this series then I want to go back and read the Bride Train series…just cause!

About the Author

Colleen Belk and Virginia Borden Maier have been colleagues and collaborators for more than thirteen years. Both authors have adopted teaching styles at their respective universities, the University of Minnesota Duluth and St. John Fisher College, that capitalize on students’ natural curiosity about high-interest topics such as dieting, global warming, and organ donation to effectively teach fundamental course topics such as cell biology, photosynthesis, and physiology. Their classroom experience has informed every chapter to help students understand biological principles, develop critical thinking skills, apply biology to their own lives, and make the introductory course more enjoyable from both sides of the desk.

Biology: Science for Life

This textbook provides a basic overview of the biological sciences for students who do not intend to continue further with the study of biology. To draw the student in, the book is arranged around concrete situations which can be explained or understood better with certain biological knowledge. For example, the first chapter begins with a story of a student who has been getting a lot of colds and he wonders what he can do to reduce the number and severity of his colds. The authors use this example to help explain the scientific method. This pattern continues throughout, as the authors touch briefly on most of the major areas of the biological sciences.

The concept is not a poor one for reaching the intended audience, though the opening vignettes are sometimes generic and/or less compelling than they might have been. And the authors, in many places, provide good, understandable, basic instruction in biology. Unfortunately, this book is rather uneven. At times the authors fail to give their audience enough credit and drag through material that can be more quickly digested. Even more often, the authors simply throw large amounts of information and vocabulary at the student without adequate explanation, perhaps delving more deeply into topics than is warranted for a non-majors introductory biology text. Clearly one can learn a lot from this text - one can, indeed in my opinion, begin their biological studies with this book. It seems more likely to me, however, that most students will be frustrated by the alternating pace and the large amounts of inadequately explained vocabulary. It's usable, but one can do better.

About the Author
Edward Shortland (1812–1893) was a New Zealand doctor, administrator, scholar and linguist. Shortland was born at Courtlands near Lympstone in Devon, England, the third son of Thomas George Shortland and brother of Willoughby Shortland, and of Peter Frederick Shortland. He was educated at Exeter grammar school and at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. in 1835 and M.A. in 1839. He then studied medicine, and was admitted an extra-licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in 1839. In 1841 Shortland went out, apparently at his brother's suggestion, to New Zealand, where on 28 June 1841 he was appointed private secretary to Governor William Hobson. On 3 August 1842 he was appointed protector of aborigines. On 10th August 1843 he landed at Akaroa on Banks' Peninsula, to act as interpreter to Colonel Godfrey's court of inquiry into the land claims of the French company, the Nanto-Bordelaise Co. of Jean Langlois, which was then trying to settle there. After the court closed he took a census of the peninsula. Shortland reported on various land claims on 18 March 1844. About 1851 he returned for a time to England, and stayed mainly at Plymouth. In 1860 Shortland served in the Expedition of the Thousand of Garibaldi. He was again in England that year, and became M.R.C.P. He then practised medicine for many years in New Zealand, and subsequently lived for some time at Parnell. In October 1889 Shortland finally returned to England. He died at Plymouth on 5 July 1893.
