ON ROSES AND BULLETS

Recently, I bought a good number of novels by Nigerian authors and started to read. The last time I read works of a Nigerian author, Chinua Achebe's "Things Fall Apart" was in college, and the book was a required reading. Since I started writing myself, I have avoided reading works by Nigerian authors for fear that I might be re-telling their stories. After my first book was published, I came to the realization that no two authors can tell the same story the same way, and so I felt more at ease reading how others told their stories.

Roses and Bullets by Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo was a riveting read. I could not put the book down, or should I say, I could not put my Kindle down. I wanted to know how such a sweet/bitter story will end, and in the end, I was haunted by the faces, the events, the circumstances that could mold as well as destroy a human being. Ginika's life was indeed a very dramatic one, as she was the epitome of the ugliness, the callousness, the brutality and the dehumanization of what a war does to, especially the innocent ones.

Roses and Bullets is a most read, and I strongly recommend it especially for those of you who love drama. When I read a book that touches my heart, I want the whole world to know about it and bask in the excitement of reading such a book.

Through a suspenseful labyrinth of legal conflicts regarding patent rights, scientific showdowns about GM food and property clashes between farmers and the biotechnology industry, Seeds asks the essential question: “Can you patent a living thing?” Or as Schmeiser famously asked, “Who owns life?”

A most interesting aspect of the play is the ambiguity around the hero Percy Schmeiser. Is he a victim or an opportunist and self-publicist? Certainly, he’s no innocent; as he keeps telling us, he’s an experienced politician, in fact an ex-mayor. He’s a believer who knows how to frame his beliefs to advantage. He can be grand and he can be petty – and as such he is antihero as much as hero.

Named the top play of the decade by Rover Arts in its review of English theatre in Montreal between 2000 and 2010, Seeds takes us back to the seminal moment when a single farmer stood up to international agribusiness and almost won.

About the Author
Annabel Soutar is the artistic director of Porte Parole, a Montreal theater company dedicated to creating and producing original documentary plays about contemporary social and political issues. Her first play, Novembre, debuted in 2000. Since then she has written 2000 Questions (2002) and contributed to Sante! (2003), a seven-part documentary series about Quebec’s health care system. Her more recent docudrama, Sexy béton (Sexy Concrete) (2009/2010), explored the collapse of the de la Concorde overpass in 2006 and the culture of corruption in Quebec’s construction industry. Sexy béton was named a finalist for the prestigious French playwriting award Le Prix Michel-Tremblay in 2011.

Awesome Book!!!!

The book was in good condition. There was a little bit of writing in the book, but nothing big and pencil was used. It's a great book. I needed it for a class, but I've recommended it to people that have a hard time choosing a career, need help with resumes and finding a job.

The most valuable career-development tool around!

I had taken a number of career definition tests in my career as an employment counselor (trying to figure out what was my true calling and how I could earn more money). Then I did the work in Michelozzi's book and came up with the scoring that indicated I would be good at counseling/social work (which I was already doing) or contract negotiations. I didn't even know what a contract negotiator was!
I discussed this outcome with my friend who worked at a large corporation. She introduced me to the head of their contracts department. I interviewed him and his staff about the work they were doing. They happened to have a trainee position open (which paid more than what I was getting as a counselor). Now, eighteen years later, I can truly say that Betty Michelozzi's book, Coming Alive from Nine to Five, is the one book which has completely turned my life around. I have loved almost every day of my changed career and I am far better paid at this work than I would e! ver have been as a counselor.
I recommend this book to all of my acquaintances who suspect it is time to change careers--and I recommend it to you. Thank you, Betty, for this truly wonderful opus!

Good for right and left brained...

This book is a well balanced text for all career searchers. It is filled with solid information, great exercises, humor, practical steps, and hope. I use it as a primary text for the Career Exploration, [Community College] class that I teach. It is also used at other institutions.
The text is currently in revision which will make it a 5 Star Text. I would recommend you purchase the new 7th edition, to be released this summer.

Charles Dickens is a fantastic storyteller, and these novels are brought to life by their original illustrations, good to see what they'd have looked like back in the day. good value too!

Beautiful books, beautiful illustrations

Four masterpieces, but just a small sample of the writing of the prolific and endlessly creative Charles Dickens. His novels probably painted a more definitive picture of Victorian London than the work of any other writer. He created more memorable, brilliantly named characters than anyone except Shakespeare – and they live on in our minds long after we have read the books.

Good to have an excellently chosen set like this on one’s Kindle, well-formatted and enhanced by beautiful original illustrations.

Without giving away the ending, I will just tell you that this love story is messy, sweet, spicy and sometimes too real l! I loved all 4 parts. Every Cross has written a book that has to be read, and you will want to read each part twice!

About the Author

Philip C. Hebert, Professor Emeritus, Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto

Philip C. Hebert is emeritus professor of family medicine in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, and chair of the research ethics board at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. For twenty years he was a family physician at Sunnybrook & Women's College Health Sciences Centre, retiring from active clinical practice in 2010. He remains on staff there as a consultant. He has an interest in many areas of ethics including disclosure, end-of-life care, consent, medical error, and medical education and teaches widely across Canada. In 2008, he received the second annual William Marsden Award from the CMA for his contribution to ethics teaching in Canada, and in 2011 he was named Academic Family Physician of the Year and received the University of Toronto's Department of Family and Community Medicine Award of Excellence.
