I liked the examples in this book and especially the color schemes that he used. I think it definitely improved my water color technique, but of course you have to practise. I did do many of the examples and continue to use it as a reference when I am painting similar scenes as shown in the examples. I would recommend it to even a beginner water colorist.

Titus Hjelm is Lecturer in Finnish Society and Culture at University College London. The Newest Weapon

In IP6, NATURE'S REVOLUTIONARY CANCER-FIGHTER, Dr. Shamsuddin presents the results of his years of research into what he terms as a potent anti-cancer supplement. Dr. Shamsuddin is more suited as a researcher than a writer as he uses a prose style that suggests his target audience is for readers much like himself. Still, for those laymen with the patience to plow through his fondness for a density of arcane prose, the results are well worth it. His research shows that a little-known component of plants called IP6 has a staggering impact on the reduction of a variety of cancers that currently plague human beings. When IP6 is combined with another common substance called inositol, the combined impact is collectively greater than either alone. This news has profound implications for those who currently have cancer and for those who do not but wish to avoid it. He adds that the potential downside is virtually nil. Therefore, IP6 ought to occupy a prominent place on any anti-cancer regimen. One ought not to assume, however, that regardless of the promise of this newest wonder drug, that other and equally potent approaches can be discarded. It's OK, could have been great

Me: Recently passed the orals. I used this book and Neff's Passing the General Surgery Oral Board Exam. I also took the Osler course. I read Cameron's 9th edition during residency and had a broad based experience.

The Good: The only book that attempts to simulate the oral 'tennis match' between you and the examiners. The author covers most of the topics seen on the boards, including a few scenarios you may not see during residency but appear on the exam. There's also descriptions of common procedure in the back- they're pretty good, but not perfect.

The Bad: As others note, a distracting number of typos. The author suggests some questionable treatments and diagnostics. He doesn't go in depth for some scenarios- you'll have to use your imagination to turn a scenario into a 7 minute question.

Overall: The author does a decent job considering the breadth of knowledge required for the orals. For a book to be complete, it would need to be gigantic. This book, though, only serves as a starting point. If you *only* used this book, you'd be borderline. Instead, take the scenarios and broaden them. You need to know a few ACLS protocols, not just one, and if a bullet enters the chest / abdomen, be prepared for a variety of injuries, not just the ones the book offers. This book would help you as a starting point for practice orals with colleagues, though you should extend the scenarios and introduce complications.

Recommendation: Considering what's at stake, I'd get the book. The author could, however, make an excellent book by fixing the typos, updating some management, and answering some 'common curveballs' as Neff calls them. If you extend the scenarios in 'How to Win', introducing common complications or alternate diagnoses (left lower quadrant pain becomes volvulus, then perforated cancer, etc), you could make your own solid study guide. For the background knowledge, I suggest UpToDate, eMedicine, NCCN guidelines (free and accurate), and begrudgingly Cameron's (the 10th edition was terrible compared to 9th). Neff's book is annoying because it covers some weaknesses in How to Win ('cuveballs' introduced into scenarios), but then doesn't expound on them. I would NOT pick up an old copy of Safe Answers. The 2011 version should be re-titled Old, Deadly Answers. I don't know if the 2013 edition fixes those errors, but the cancer management was particularly terrible for 2011.

I would also take the Osler course just to get in a proper frame of mind, see some curveballs thrown (and how to handle them), and immerse yourself in the oral's format. Be prepared, though, to have questions on some of the material presented. I wouldn't consider the course to be necessary.

My core book for orals

Recently passed, and used this as my core - read it three times in 3 months preparing, and used it for practice mock orals with a friend. Also used syllabi from one of the major courses, and some old ABSITE notes, but this was the one to memorize. In fact, 2 days before taking the test, I read the entire book as my final review. Other reviews are correct - many spelling / grammar errors, but if that really bothers you I think you should refocus on the content. I found this more readable than the 'passing the general surgery..." book.

This exciting volume organized by Jean Jacques Weber provides an overview of this subarea of linguistics. As he says "the book focuses on the main problems that have fascinated scholars working at the interface between language and literature: What is literature? How does literary discourse differ from other discourse types? How do we read and interpret literary texts? What is style? What is the relationship between language, literature and society?"
Fine essays written by a few of the most important scholars of the stylistics area are edited as chapters of the book. One can choose while reading them all or just a special one. Each section introduces a particular approach, thus covering the major tendencies in stylistics in the last 35 years: formalist, functionalist, affective, pedagogical, pragmatic, critical, feminist and cognitive. The aim is to provide a full sense of what stylistics is all about.
The reader will find out who are the main stylists up to the presente and what do they think about the discipline. Readers are encouraged to take up their own position in the fundamental debates. To grant this task, the early chapters introducting approaches current in the 1960s and 1970s are each followed by a more recent paper which takes issue with some of the assuptions behind these theories. The second part of the book presents the main currents in contemporary stylistics: pedagogical stylistics and the differents types of contextualized stylistics practised nowadays.
There are suggestions for further reading, and notes and references are provided for each essay. I would recomend this book for all that work with linguistic criticism, not just literary stylistics studies.
