The die is cast.

In the third Quarry book, the series' premise is fully realized. The transition from hit man simply taking orders for a murder to hit man detective solving a murder before it happens is complete. There are very few detective books in which the crime is solved before it happens, and none that I can recall in which the detective murders the potential murderer. Nor can I recall a series based on this idea. Truly an original series! I'm looking forward to the rest of the books.

Has Quarry Met His Match?

“Quarry’s Deal” is the third book in the Quarry series. It was first published in 1976 as the Dealer. It really doesn’t matter which Quarry book you pick up first. They are all top-notch, gritty crime novels, all quick reading, and all worthy additions to your library.

Throughout the books, the reader never learns what Quarry’s real name is. The back story is that he spent some years in the Marines in Vietnam, returned to his hometown in Ohio, only to find his wife in bed with the local mechanic, walked over the next day to confront the guy, and somehow the jack holding the car up under which the guy was working gave way. Okay, maybe somebody kicked the jack. Quarry was not convicted, but was not welcome in the town and grew morose and depressed. That’s when the Broker contacted him and offered him an opportunity to do the work that Uncle Sam had trained him to do: killing. There are people out there apparently who want someone taken care of and the Broker acts as a middleman putting together the client with the two-man hitman teams (one does surveillance and one does the hit). At least, the Broker acted as a middleman before Quarry, responded to being betrayed, by finishing off the Broker and taking his files of contract killers. Now, Quarry follows these killers and, after finding out who the target is, offers to stop the hit and, for an additional fee, find out who ordered the hit.

In some respects, the Quarry books have a lot of plot-line similarities, but so do all the James Bond films and all the Tarzan books. In any case, these books are absolutely terrific entertainment.

Quarry’s Deal is set in the swinging seventies and it opens with Quarry enjoying himself at an apartment complex in Florida, one occupied almost entirely by divorced women. Quarry has attached himself to one of these divorcees and has, to put it bluntly, enjoying himself. “This one’s name was Nancy. She was wearing a skimpy black bikini. She had short dark hair and looked like a fashion model.”

But, he is there to do work and he is surveilling a contract killer even when he is lounging around at the pool, eyeing the divorcees in their bikinis. He hopes he won’t have to kill her as he had never killed a woman before and he hadn’t counted on her looking like this. He had “no idea she radiated this aura of some goddam thing or another, some damn thing that made me want to know her, made me uncomfortable at the thought of having to kill her.”

The story takes Quarry back to the Midwest where he finds this killer (a woman no less) and tries to put together what her plan is before it is too late.

The writing is smooth and flows well. Quarry tells his story with a terrific sense of humor. It is certainly set in the seventies with the women wearing pants suits with halter tops. The story has enough action and violence to make it work as an action story. Quarry is not to be trifled with, not by amateurs and not by professionals.

At 188 pages, this book should take a lot longer to read than it does, but maybe Collins just knows how to tell a good story.

Quarry keeps coming...figuratively and literally. Lol

I know this was the favorite of the author but I didn't love it. I liked it but didn't really love it. He's still his sarcastic and violent best but the story didn't really do it for me. I loved the premise of what Quarry does for a living now but I got bored with it a few times. It was interesting the new relationship he has in this one. But I'll keep reading more of his "adventures."

Chronicle of the Blues and Beyond

Who will want this book in their library? Serious students of African-American music, scholars of American music history, those interested in music production, folks with a penchant for interpreting periods of history through their music, and just about anyone crazy about early blues and jazz. Black Recording Artists, 1877-1926 gives us a very detailed discography of what was recorded where, when, and by whom. For collectors of old music, this is a goldmine of information. Besides being a handy reference book to have on one's shelf, this hefty work is also a peek into a different life and time. One imagines someone a century from now researching the music of our times, laughing at some of the titles, wondering about some of the artists, and making connections between different musicians, vocalists, and studios.

Some of the strange song titles one encounters when browsing the book are the likes of: "Mama, Whip! Mama, Spank!" as well as "Got to Cool My Doggies Now," "A Green Gal Can't Catch On," and "You've Got to Beat Me to Keep Me." Song titles reflect the times, African-American lives, and national obsessions. As one reads through song titles, it is easy to start humming aloud as many of the songs are classics. Others are more obscure - and sometimes more interesting. At the end, though, one clear message rings through and that is how important the blues were during this period, how they helped to shape an entire culture, and how they speak to us today in much the same way they were intended to then.

As a discography, this is an excellent piece of work. One can't help but wish for a few photographs of some of the vocalists who recorded, though, or perhaps some narrative on the development of blues, jazz, or gospel. Even brief bios on certain singers would add a great deal to what is otherwise a valuable resource. Still, even lacking photos and singer bios, the book is incredibly detailed. The compiler has obviously put his life's work into this piece.

Wow! This book is the most comprehensive discography on the topic of Black Recording Artists across the turn of the century that I have ever found or read. Incredible research, detail, and a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Author Craig Gibbs obviously has a passion for the topic and is incredibly well researched. Brilliant!!!

About the Author
Nurudin Farah is the author of nine novels, including From a Crooked Rib, Links and his Blood in the Sun trilogy: Maps, Gifts, and Secrets. His novels have been translated into seventeen languages and have won numerous awards. Farah was named the 1998 laureate of the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, "widely regarded as the most prestigious international literary award after the Nobel" (The New York Times). Born in Baidoa, Somalia, he now lives in Cape Town, South Africa, with his wife and their children.

Somewhat Awkward and Lacking in Context

This slim novel by Somali writer Farah was originally published in 1970 but fell out of print until the widespread acclaim of his "Blood in the Sun" trilogy in the late '90s. Written in 1968, the book is set during the months leading up to Somalia's independence in 1960. Like a great deal of postcolonial African fiction available in translation, its primary theme is the role of women in society. The story is written from the perspective of Ebla (perhaps so named because at the time of the writing in 1968, Italian archeologists had just identified the site of ancient city of the same name in Syria), an 18-year-old nomad woman who flees her rural settlement when she learns of her impending marriage to a middle-aged man. In doing so, she is spurning the traditional values of her culture -- perhaps foreshadowing for the societal changes that will come with independence and modernity.

Sneaking out of her hut in the wee hours, she flees without a plan, leaving her brother and grandfather behind. Her first stop is a small town (although quite large and bewildering to her), where she stays with a distant cousin. There, she cares for her cousin's pregnant wife and makes the acquaintance of a confident woman next door. Drawn into smuggling by her cousin and alerted to his plan to sell her off as a bride, she flees again, this time to Mogadishu with the nephew of the neighbor. Here, life is even more confusing, as she becomes his bride. When he leaves for several months training in Italy, she must rely on another self-sufficient older woman in her building. She somewhat passively reacts to this abandonment by allowing herself to be propelled into the arms of yet another man, who pays her for the distinction of becoming his "wife".

The cultural mechanics of all this are somewhat confusing to the non-native reader and a certain amount of annotation would certainly help this almost 40-year-old book. For example, some background on the quasi-Islamic practice of informal "temporary" marriages at the time would provide some much-needed context for some of Ebla's actions. So while the broad theme of Ebla's treatment as just another "beast" or "cattle" subject to the whim of the men around her is evident, I suspect there's a good deal of nuance that lost along the way. Written when Farah was only in his early 20s, the English prose is rather awkward and makes for choppy reading. While certainly of interest to those interested in feminism in Africa, those seeking a more accessible introduction to Farah's work might be better off trying his more recent novels, Links and Knots, which are set in Mogadishu during and after the American peacekeeping efforts in the early '90s.

Independence . . .

Written 40 years ago, this early novel from Somali writer Nuruddin Farah tells of an independent but uneducated young woman who leaves her tribe rather than marry a man she does not care for and flees to a life in town - first a rural center called Belet Wene and then to the city of Mogadishu. It is near the time of Somalia's independence from Italy, and her unsophisticated and limited grasp of what independence means for her may well represent the author's vision of Somalia, about to steer its own course in the modern world - a path that has led, as we know, to much political and economic discord.

Ebla, the central character, takes shelter first with a cousin, whose wife gives birth to a child in the first days of her arrival. In spite of her independence, Ebla often permits herself to be guided by decisions others make for her, which is much of the time. As a result, she marries a man she has met only once, and while her first husband is away for several months, she marries another man, who is himself already married (permissible for him in a Muslim culture) but to a battle-ax of a woman who thoroughly intimidates him.

In a picaresque style that varies between comedy and melodrama, the story focuses in passing on the conditions of being female in Somalia where, created from the "crooked rib" of Adam, a woman counts in Muslim law as only half a person, marriages are arranged for them, female circumcision is common, and only a clever, worldly woman can achieve a hard-won independence from dominance by men.

snapshots into culture

I have recently been interested in reading books from North Africa and the Middle East, both fiction/non-fiction, and this book was no disappointment for me. I enjoyed the snapshots into the culture of the region and the language was able to evoke great imagery during my reading of this. I lent this to my mother while she was visiting and she also lapped it up, we have very different tastes in literature, so I can see how this would reach a great audience. It can also be a great course book, this is how we used it, to open discussion on independence, freedom, and democratic values.

Another killer ending

Do you know that feeling where your heart is pounding, you pulse is racing, your stomach twisting in knots, and your adrenaline pumping? All of the six jedi apprentice books have done that to me, and this one is no exception. As an eighteen year old college student, I am well out of the age range, but I not only love these books, I have also gotten my twenty year old roomate hooked on them. My one major problem is the relationship between Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan forgave Guerra for betraying him on Bandomeer and almost getting him killed. He also forgave Jono and Nield. I think its time for Qui-Gon to learn another lesson from his padawan, especially since its partly his fault Obi-Wan left. This book adds a depth to both characters that didnt really exist before. Obi-Wan realizes that he is not complete without Qui-Gon, and Qui-Gon begins to realize how much Obi-Wan means to him. They are meant for each other, but they make it so hard for themselves. It also allows us a deeper look into the temple, and the problems there. Its a wonderful book, with great characters who grab your heart and wont let go.

if you are familliar with the series, this book will only reinforce your love of Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon. I found myself on pins and needles towrds the end, Obi-Wan really grows up in this book and realizes who/what he is - a JEDI! The best part is we get to see Qui-Gon interacting with other jedi, which _really_ helps to flesh him out even more. The only problem i had with this book is that it was too short (as were the other 5)...if only they would make this an adult series! but its still one of the best series out there for the old school jedi faction of star wars fans... :) read it!

This book was awesome. The whole series is great and I can't wait for the next installment. I read this on the way home from school and I realized that this is one book that can really touch you. The realationships between the characters are so complex that you can almost think of the next move they will make. In my opinion Tahl is really cool, Cerasi almost had me in tears, Roenni showed real friendship, Qui-Gon realized that Obi-Wan is just a kid and that you can't give up on kids, Neild learned that you can't trust everybody and Obi-Wan realized what he was... This book has only one fault... it's too short. (And please don't let the age range keep you from buying this book- I'm over the "limit" and I love these books.)
