ok, but need an english version...
By Amazon Customer
This book is very helpful, although a bit variable in difficulty. The only problems I found were with the optics section, in which the model answers were of no help at all, only giving formulae and not showing the actual calculations. However, this shouldn't be too much of a problem if you have the relevant text books available. I was using this book for revision purposes for the English PQE part 1's so some questions weren't relevant, but there isn't one available at the moment so this will have to do.

If you're in O.D. school, get this book!
By Kirsten Lovercheck
This is a great collection of practice questions to help you prepare for Parts 1, 2, & 3 of NBEO. Covers all areas including public health & clinicolegal. Human biology section is somewhat easier than the board questions, and the optics section is pretty tough (but therefore pretty similar to the board questions!!). I found this book invaluable, as it is the only one of its kind out there. It is really great for testing yourself after studying a section.

This book was a great review for NBEO Part I (which i just took). I would recommend this for all the second year optometry students studying like mad for the boards!! Good to use as a supplement after studying each subject.

Anunnaki: Gods No More, by Dr Sasha Lessin

Dr. Lessin explains the Anunnki's involvement in human history. The giant olden gods, folks with high tech & their heirs chain us to short, hard lives. The "gods"rocketed here from the planet Nibiru & bred with Homo Erectus to create us as short term slaves & soldiers. We praised them & killed in their names: Allah = the Sumerian Nannar, Yahweh = Enlil , Adanoi = Enki. Read this book & transcend the "gods'"religions.

About the Author
Sasha Lessin Ph.D (U.C.L.A. anthropology Ph.D.), author of Anunnaki: Gods No More and producer of the hugely popular web site, www.enkispeaks.com, studied with the late Zecharia Sitchin, for many years. Mr. Sitichin asked Lessin to create popular internet, book and college-level courses to revise ancient anthropology. Sitchin asked Lessin to help disseminate written, graphic and traditional stories of ETs, hithertofore considered mythic "gods" on Earth from 450,000 years ago to 300 B.C. as well as the latest findings in astronomy that relate to the planet Nibiru from which the ETs came to Earth for gold to shield their planet, Nibiru. To this end, Dr. Lessin and his wife, Janet (a lifelong contactee) present public slide shows, radio and youtube programs and lectures.

Very sloppy!
By Brian L. Tuck
The best way to describe this book is sloppy! It seemed like something that was just quickly thrown together and put out for sale. While I know the author is very knowledgeable and has studied this topic for many years, it did not come across this way in the book. There is a brief introduction that is pretty much impossible to read due to MANY gramatical and punctuation mistakes. Somebody really should have thought to proofread this book before it went to print. The book then quickly dives into the theory on human history. There are so many names of idividual "Anunnakis" presented, that it quickly gets difficult to keep track of who is who. My other complaint is that there is very little, if any, supporting information for the theories presented. Again, I know the author has studied this topic and has reason for these theories, but they are not in the book. All in all, this was a very disappointing read. I would not recommend this book to anyone. Try one of the many other books on the subject. This book is sloppy and very poor in quality.

Summary from ZS Earth Chronicles
By A. Amaya
it was okay, but basically is a compendium from other books, like Zacharias Zitchin's Earth Chronicles and Tellinger's slave species. Don't know why there isn't a Kindle version, since this book's worth is only text, its pictures are a random-themed collection of photos.

Easier than reading Sitchin
By Robin Landry
While I think the 12th Planet series are wonderful, Sahsa Lessin's book is easier to digest. It's almost like reading a novel, thought for the life of me, I can't seem to find the good guys. What a train wreck these 'gods' left our planet and psyches in. No wonder we have continual war and serial killers. Everything less than life-affirming thing we've every even thought about doing to each other, these 'gods' have already done and on a much great level.

If half of this book is true, the god we are taught to worship at the threat of a hell when we die, have set up hell on earth with their petty rivalries. We're like the pit bulls who tear each other to bits for their entertainment. Any critical reading of the books of history that have been left behind, starting with the Sumerian Text and ending with the Bible, give us a glimpse into the mind of supposedly higher beings who thought nothing of killing thousands of us at a time just to prove some petty point.

Take the example of the term "Jezebel" an unscrupulous woman. The real Jezebel was a descent of Enki and Inanna(a girl who seduced her uncle to gain power) who married a king named Ahab. "She believed that the alliance between Phoenicia and Israel could 'replace separatism pragmatism replace ideology and trade replace bloodshed . . . When Ahab defeated an Assyrian attack, Elijah, Enlil's representative in Israel, blamed her(Jezebel) for Ahab's decision not to sacrifice the captured Assyrian king and his men to Enlil and instead create an alliance with Assyria."page 156-7.

So a 'wanton' woman is one who wants peace and doesn't want to kill kings and their armies to the local 'god' to feed his enormous ego. Or how about Enlil's other favorite Abraham who's told to murder his son to show his loyalty to the god Enlil. I always wondered how anyone could worship(work for) a god who asks you to murder your own child. I would have said no thanks.

Throughout this book you see photos of the land after 'god' destroyed it(Sodom and Gomorra), drawings of the old cities, and hear our oldest story, the Epic of Gilgimesh explained.

Lessin says that some of these 'gods', beings from the planet Nibiru(Hebrew?) stayed on planet earth and are still in charge. That the Nibiru is on its way back causing extreme weather, earthquakes and volcanoes going off, but that's just crazy talk. All of the current weather extremes are due to global warming caused by our SUVs. Yes, we're being blamed as usual by a group of beings that had little if any regard for their creations.

Their symbology is everywhere. A winged disk is popular on our cars and motorcycles; the dollar sign is the name Isis over-lapped, the all-seeing eye, because 'god' is always watching you, and many other subtle signs the 'gods' have left us with.

Regardless of the truth of this tale, we do need to realize that we're all brothers and sisters on a small planet that needs us to care for it as we would our homes. And only time will tell if this planet of 'gods' will make an appearance again in our skies, coming out of the south as legend says. And it's probably only coincidence that the Vatican has an observatory at the South Pole.

City Smells, by Edit Red, Lin Robinson, Leslie Joseph, Sarah Rose Etter, Rachelle Hafen, Jane Bratton, Alice Shin, Alec Ross, Dewi Putri K

Cities are as much collections of smells as they are collections of bricks: smells define them. From one block to another you can be overwhelmed by any number of odours: the garbage outside a busy restaurant, flowers on display outside a florist or freshly ground coffee as you meander past an open door to a café. Some city smells make you sigh warmly and think of old friends; others, like those that seep out of dank alleyways, make you skip a step and screw up your nose. Those of us that live in cities cannot avoid the olfactory messages that the streets bombard us with. Nor should we. This book is an international collection of poetry, fiction and non-fiction dedicated to celebrating the redolent urban bouquet. So take a deep breath, and enjoy this assorted mélange of City Smells.

An enjoyable anthology
By Alec Ross
City Smells is an anthology of flash fiction, poetry and creative non-fiction all based on a similar theme. The variety within this collection is exceptionally good, and I really enjoy the fact that the selections contained in this anthology are short--it makes for quick and easy reads while still remaining quite thought provoking. It's also refreshing to read so much material by several emerging writers. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something fresh and a little different.

Something for everybody
By Alan Emmins
'City Smells' is a collection of flash fiction, fiction, poetry and non-fiction all tied to the theme of the title. This is a great book, especially for dipping in and out of. The writers come from all over the world, and for that reason 'City Smells' is rich in its variety of writing styles and language, but, more than that, it takes the reader into a world diverse with smells and the many ways in which people live with and remember them.

Authentic Perspectives
By L. Joseph
City Smells is my favorite type of reading...a small press anthology full of diverse writing by real people. The uniting theme is smells...you can go anywhere from there! It's a satisfying read, and a reminder to find inspiration in even the most mundane experiences in life.

Great read on late 19th C Mexico
By James H. McDonald
A very interesting take on Porfirian Mexico (late 1800s) through the eyes of a progressive, feminist journalist who was seeing the country and it's social, political, and cultural dynamics through fresh, perceptive eyes.

The ultimate niche book
By Michael Volpe
This book is for only one of two type of people, but if you're one, you must read it. First, it's for all Nellie Bly fans, and they probably don't need to be told.

Second, it's for anyone studying or otherwise interested in 19th Century Mexican History, be it for a PhD or any other reason.

For those folks, this is an absolutely fascinating look at a time and place by someone whose genius hadn't totally formed yet, but who nevertheless presents a penetrating look at this period in history.

For Bly fans like myself, this book should be as fascinating for its flaws as for its moments of genius. For instance, Bly all but believed an old wives tale about marijuana and claimed definitively that not only was it totally safe but that its effects went on for five days.

Clearly, she'd gone on to check such stories much more closely in further years.

Furthermore, much of what's interesting in the book is left to the imagination. She took her mother along on this trip as a chaperone but little is said beyond that. We can only imagine how all that worked out.

She also mentions that she nearly went to jail but only wiggled her way out of it with, "but by means of a little bravado I convinced them that I had the upper hand, and they left me unhurt."

We can only imagine what actually happened, but Bly would figure out how to cleverly figure out of such tight spots routinely in her career.

In conclusion, Nellie Bly fans should view this book as a sort of coming of age book for a journalist about to become a historical figure. For those studying 19th century Mexican hisotry, the Mexico described in this book deserves to make its way into the larger study of Mexican history during this time period.

Kindle Version Only
By sausagesky
This review is for the kindle version only. Overall, I thought that the book was great but there are some serve limitation of the book on the kindle version, namely viewing the diagrams. There are a lot of important diagrams in the book that a reader needs to see to understand the UML process and they are all very difficult to view. In most cases, part of the diagram is cut off.

I have viewed the ebook via my paperwhite, kindle for pc and kindle for iphone; they all have the same problems. I have changed the font size but will little impact. In the paperwhite, you can tap to move around the diagram but this is not an ideal solution. In kindle for PC, this is not an option which means that there is no way to view the whole diagram.

The book itself is well paced for a beginner.

As this book is primarily about diagrams, viewing these diagrams is of primary importance. I wish someone had thought about diagram resolution and formatting when this was converted to the kindle version.

Old Fogie Relearns UML
By John T. Ferro
Once upon a time, long long ago, I was introduced to UML as a concept. Since I had no immediate need for it, I stored the idea of a Unified Modeling Language somewhere deep in my memory. Years of programming later, after I had retired, I started planning some "projects" that I thought would be interesting to do. As I started outlining some requirements, a thought bubbled up from those deep recesses of the mind and I heard my self thinking... "Wait a minute, I remember something about a way of documenting these ideas from years ago." I recalled it was UML and when I went to Amazon.com to look for offerings, I found a backdated version of UML -2 (Current standard is UML-5) that was cheap and available. I bought a Kindle version as well as the hard-copy just to have flexibility in studying. UML 2 for dummies is awesome. It presented information in an order that was easily remembered and refreshed my prior learning. From explaining the "guru" terminology through diagramming and Object-Oriented concepts to code generation, this book explained it all. As far as I am concerned, it was a very good buy and I don't have any regrets in having spent the money and time. (Oh, yes, I did apply what I learned and got my 'projects' up and running with little or no logic errors!)

I ended up buying another more advanced book and found it to be much more useful.
By AmznCust
I'm a software developer with almost 20 years of experience but have never used UML before and found myself having some trouble following UML created by others and unsure where to even begin to create my own UML documentation. I found it was just too basic to be of much use. I ended up buying another more advanced book and found it to be much more useful.

surprisingly complete & detailed
By John E. Mosley
I bought this book because I'm thinking of buying an electric bicycle and, as far as I can tell, this is the only decent buyer's guide. I had no idea what to expect when ordering it, but I was pleasantly surprised to see how complete and up-to-date (as of August 2011) it is. And I'm very impressed with the authors' in-depth knowledge of the subject -- they really know their electric bikes. At first the long chapter on the history of electric bikes seemed long, but it's not as it really tells what works and what doesn't and how we got to be were we are today, so it's quite relevant as opposed to old history. Chapters explain battery technology as it relates to electric bikes and the compromises between different solutions. The book is heavily illustrated (there's a color diagram or photo on most pages). It's just packed with insightful information. I found it very helpful and recommend it highly. Note that the book has a website which gives sample content:

Comprehensive and clearly written history of the electric bike and a survey of the market up to 2010
By Charles Hall
This book is a comprehensive view of the history of electric bikes and the current offerings as of 2010. Despite the small dimensions of the book it is packed with color photos and color drawings to explain every concept. If you're curious about electric bikes, this is the book to get.
As a buyer's guide, it's somewhat less useful, at least for Americans. Virtually none of the brands mentioned here exist in the USA, except perhaps in niche bike shops somewhere. So I guess perhaps the authors can be forgiven for not covering the US scene, since there really isn't one.

The Song of the Dodo: Island Biogeography in an Age of Extinction, by David Quammen

David Quammen's book, The Song of the Dodo, is a brilliant, stirring work, breathtaking in its scope, far-reaching in its message -- a crucial book in precarious times, which radically alters the way in which we understand the natural world and our place in that world. It's also a book full of entertainment and wonders.
In The Song of the Dodo, we follow Quammen's keen intellect through the ideas, theories, and experiments of prominent naturalists of the last two centuries. We trail after him as he travels the world, tracking the subject of island biogeography, which encompasses nothing less than the study of the origin and extinction of all species. Why is this island idea so important? Because islands are where species most commonly go extinct -- and because, as Quammen points out, we live in an age when all of Earth's landscapes are being chopped into island-like fragments by human activity.
Through his eyes, we glimpse the nature of evolution and extinction, and in so doing come to understand the monumental diversity of our planet, and the importance of preserving its wild landscapes, animals, and plants. We also meet some fascinating human characters. By the book's end we are wiser, and more deeply concerned, but Quammen leaves us with a message of excitement and hope.

Amazon.com Review
In a wonderful weave of science, metaphor, and prose, David Quammen, author of The Flight of the Iguana, applies the lessons of island biogeography - the study of the distribution of species on islands and islandlike patches of landscape - to modern ecosystem decay, offering us insight into the origin and extinction of species, our relationship to nature, and the future of our world.

From Publishers Weekly
Quammen (Natural Acts) has successfully mixed genres in this highly impressive and thoroughly enjoyable work. The scientific journalism is first-rate, with the extremely technical field of island biogeography made fully accessible. We learn how the discipline developed and how it has changed conservation biology. And we learn just how critical this field is in the face of massive habitat destruction. The book is also a splendid example of natural history writing, for which Quammen traveled extensively. The Channel Islands off California and the Madagascan lemurs are captivatingly portrayed. Equally impressive are the character studies of the scientists who have been at the forefront of island biogeography. From his extended historical analysis of the journeys and insights of 19th-century biologist Alfred Russell Wallace to his field and laboratory interviews with many of the men and women who have followed in Wallace's intellectual wake, Quammen delightfully adds the human dimension to his discussion of science and natural history. Using a canvas as large as the world, he masterfully melds anecdotes about swimming elephants, collecting fresh feces from arboreal primates in Brazil and searching for the greater bird of paradise on the tiny island of Aru into an irreverent masterpiece. That a book on so technical a subject could be so enlightening, humorous and engaging is an extraordinary achievement. Author tour.

Thoughtful, entertaining, and important
By Douglas A. Greenberg
*The Song of the Dodo* is a very long book on what some of us believe to be a vitally important subject, the ongoing loss of worldwide bioversity. Anyone interested in the fate of the world's wild creatures and yes, the fate of the world itself should read it and will likely enjoy it.
David Quammen does an exemplary job of leading his readers through almost two centuries of significant ideas and debates related to "island biogeography," a subject which is a lot more interesting and certainly a lot more significant than it might sound. Begining with the fascinating story of the Darwin vs. Wallace story vis-a-vis "who really came up with the theory of evolution first?" Quammen goes on to explain and illustrate just why the biogeography of islands is so important to any consideration of biodiversity and wildlife conservation for the world as a whole.
In weaving this historical narrative, Quammen doesn't just encapsulate theories (though he does this in some detail), he takes his reader into the field where the sometimes abstract principles behind diversity/rarity/extinction are actually demonstrated through the predicaments faced by various creatures. Quammen ventures to the Aru Islands, the Galapagos, Madagascar, Guam, Tasmania, Mauritius, Barro Colorado Island in Panama, the Amazonian rain forest, and on and on. It's a veritable world tour of places where rare and endangered animals struggle for existence in a world where human encroachment is causing an alarming acceleration in the rate of species extinction.
Through his mostly fascinating discussion of places, species, and biologeographical theories and the people behind those theories, Quammen shows an unusual ability to restate abstruse ideas in clear and understandable terms. He also writes with humor, a gentle and humane world-view, and an excellent eye for empirical detail.
For me, the most painful chapter was "Rarity Unto Death," in which he recounts selected stories revealing how various animals (and peoples) have been lost to extinction. The discussions of the extinction of the dodo and other wild creatures are terribly sad; the horrifying tale of the demise of the Tasmanian aborigines is heart-rending and infuriating.
In the end, Quammen's workmanlike effort establishes a "big picture" demonstrating how small, isolated ecosystems render their wild inhabitants increasingly vulnerable to extinction. We come to see that the biological notion of "islands" applies increasingly not just to small land bodies surround by water, but to more and more of our continental ecosystems as they are carved up into isolated pockets of habitat through human encroachment and development. Indeed, increasingly, the world's ecosystems are composed of various kinds of "islands," a situation that threatens to result in catastrophic losses of biodiversity over time.
That the situation is not entirely hopeless for all creatures is shown by the remarkable, human-aided recovery of the Mauritius kestrel, rescued in recent years from the very brink of extinction. But certainly the message overall delivered by Quammen is not a comforting or upbeat one.
In a book of this length and scope, there inevitably will be sections that particular readers may not like. I found the chapter on theorists McArthur and Wilson a bit pedantic and boring in places, partly due to the very abstruse nature of their mathematical theories. However, it also irked me a bit that Quammen took such an awe-filled, uncritical attitude here, particularly in his worshipful presentation of his audience with the Great Man, Edward O. Wilson. Wilson is a towering figure in the history of biology and biography, certainly but a few words of criticism might have been in order here. Yes, the leftist activitists of the mid-seventies were out of line in pouring water on Wilson's head at a scientific meeting and their accusations toward him vis-a-vis his theories of sociobiology were shrill and excessive. But the truth is that some of Wilson's human-related "speculations" in the final chapter of his book on sociobiology *were* overreaching, inappropriate, and yes, foolish, and he deserved some of the criticism he received. In providing a discussion of the furor raised by the mathematical grand theorizing proposed by MacArthur and Wilson and other scientists beginning in the sixties, Quammen also could have pointed out that the often emotional debate over "mathematical modeling" vs. "detailed, real world empirical research" took place (and in some ways, continues) not just in the biological sciences but in a large number of academic fields. Whereas it's easy to dismiss extremist critics of truly useful mathematical models as narrow-minded or antediluvian, the proliferation of derivative, marginal, and in some cases, fairly useless "quantitative models" has at times threatened to eviscerate various fields of study, emptying them of virtually all attention to empirical detail and rendering them arid and lifeless.
I also was just a tad disappointed in the book's final section, where Quammen pays all too short shrift, in my view, to the question of "so what?" as it relates to the ongoing loss of world biodiversity. He makes the point that human encroachment is creating mass extinctions, but really doesn't drive home his thoughts as to why urban dwellers with no plans to visit the rainforest or the Galapagos should really care. I guess to Quammen the tragedy represented by this trend is self-evident, but what's really frightening to some of us is just how easy it is for people to live out their lives without ever having to give a darn about these broad, long-term issues of biodiversity. The question, "Why should people care?" needed atleast a bit more attention, I think.
Overall, however, this is a fine, readable, well-crafted, and wonderful book. I salute David Quammen for his accomplishment.

A global trek for survival
By Stephen A. Haines
Over a couple of cold ones at the local pub, the good doctor and i burst out simultaneously: "I found this incredible book! You've got to read it!" It was, of course, Quammen. That's the kind of reaction this writer generates. His prose seizes your attention as he gently leads you into deserts, mountainous jungles, riverside woodlands and isolated islands in the Pacific. His quiet courage forces you to remind yourself that he's not gleaning his information from the vast list of sources in the back of this book, but from the researchers in the field. And he's right there with them as he relates their stories to him for you. Quammen writes books you want to carry around, waving at people, urging them to enjoy the superior writing and the critical message. It's all about our survival.
Quammen's resurrection of Alfred Russell Wallace was long overdue. Others have tried to bring this figure back into common knowledge, but the revival was either to accuse Darwin of plagiarism or taint Wallace's accomplishments with the flaws of penury and spiritualism. Quammen handles him as a total human being who achieved through inspiration in a delirium, what Darwin took two decades to accomplish. Quammen doesn't need to balance the two, he's more concerned with explaining the concepts in ways we can understand.
It's Quammen's ability to make you feel you are accompanying him on his quest to see how Nature that places him far above other science writers. He understands the issues, recognizes the value of the research being done and presents the methods and events alike with unblemished clarity. As a writer concerned with the impact of humanity on the world's environment, Quammen exhibits a unique talent. While the ongoing extinction of species remains the central issue of this book, Quammen is able to show how dedicated researchers given support from concerned and caring people can begin to slow that eradication of our fellow species. Quammen's concern doesn't translate into alarmist rhetoric. He calls to us softly but urgently: "There's work to be done. There's people out there doing it. Help them how you can. They're our symbol of hope."

Dodo is not for Dodos. Quammen is supurb.
By A Customer
Spring 1997. An active volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat forced thousands to flee the island. Britain is gripped by the worst drought in two centuries. The koala population in Australia is exploding. Brooklyn's trees are being eaten by the Asian long-horned beetle. If you see no relationship among these events, read David Quammen's superb book, "The Song of the Dodo," and learn about island biogeography, "the study of the facts and patterns of species distribution."

When most people look at animals they only see the animals--tigers, tortoises, hornbills, rhinos and so on. They never ask why an animal is the way it is or how it got that way; where it came from and what it is like. Few wonder why animals are where they are and why they're not where they're not. Quammen does, so he takes readers on an intriguing and fascinating tour of island biogeography that relates the history of famous early biologists from Charles Darwin, Alfred Russel Wallace and Joseph Hooker to biogeographers of today like Michael Soulé and Edward O. Wilson.

Quammen's bibliography is 23 pages of references in very tiny type. Fortunately, despite years spent researching Dodo, Quammen wasn't content to spend all his time reading dry academic papers and obscure texts. Instead he broke out his hiking boots and retraced the steps of some of these explorers. He describes his personal experiences colorfully with analogies, anecdotes and descriptions. If you've been to some of the places he describes, you feel like you ought to go back to see through opened eyes. If you haven't been there, you feel like you ought to go--with Quammen's book in your backpack. Here's his description of Komodo dragons being fed a goat carcass by rangers on Komodo Island in Indonesia.

"They snarf and chomp. They gorge. They thrash, they scuffle, they tug and twist. They stir up one helluva ruckus. Within a few seconds they have composed themselves at its axis; elbow to elbow, jaws locked on the meat, tails swinging, they resemble a monstrous nine-pointed starfish. Their round-snouted faces, which looked as gentle and dim as a basset hound's until just a moment ago, have gone smeary with blood. When the goat rips in half, they split into two mobs over the severed halves and the tussling continues. They have each seized a mouthful but the mouthfuls are still held together, barely, by bone and sinew. They wrestle. They lunge for new jaw-grips and clamp down, straining greedily against the tensile limits of the mangled goat.

Much of Dodo is a long tale of complex ecological concepts woven together so that those explored in the beginning are introduced again later. Quammen's observations, historical and personal, are part text, part story. Some are humorous; some are tragic. Plan to read the book at least twice. You may want to start a notebook.

Then, when you finish reading The Song of the Dodo, you might want to take your children to a zoo or natural history museum to show them endangered and threatened animals, birds, reptiles, amphibians insects and plants. You may want to explain that some of these species probably won't be around when their children's children--your grandchildren--are adults. Some species may become extinct in your lifetime. None will ever evolve to fill the void left by extinction. There will be no new rhinos, elephants, grizzlies, gorillas, tigers or anything else.

According to island biogeographers, what islands are good at, whether surrounded by water, farmland or urbanization, is extinction. Parks and preserves just aren't large enough. Nowhere is large enough. You are living among tomorrow's dodos. Some are within a few miles of you.

The Song of the Dodo belongs on every true environmentalist's bookshelf, alongside Aldo Leopold's "Sand County Almanac" and Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring." It should be required reading in any college course that touches on the subject of environment. Quammen, who twice won the National Magazine Award for his writing in Outside magazine, deserves a far more prestigious award for this book.
