SIMPLY, THE BEST BOOK ON POOL

Normally, I wouldn't take the time to write a review, however, I owe a lot to Ray Martin and his book --- it dramatically changed my pool game and fostered my love for the game.
The other night I was playing eight-ball and was in a virtually impossible position to make a shot. Using a little imagination and three principles I learned a long time ago from the 99 Critical Shots, I was able to make a really slick shot, instead of playing a safety.
However, this is NOT a book of trick shots. It is a book of fundamental principles, many of which I doubt you can learn on your own (at least, I couldn't have). In fact, the book does an excellent job of emphasizing that pool is not about trick shots, but about controlling your position.
As a side note, about ten years ago I was playing straight pool in Elizabeth, NJ. I had discovered the 99 Critical Shots three or four years earlier. There was a guy who was watching me play pool for a half-hour, until his table was called. Then, he picked up his case and left. Spray-painted across the case was "Ray Martin".

You say you're good? This will make you better!

If you are looking for a good book for beginners, this isn't it. This book is all about making a good pool player better. It assumes a basic knowledge of pool has already been established. If you're a beginner, check out Ewa Mataya Laurance's "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Pool & Billiards." It's a great straight-forward book to get you started right. But if you're already a pretty good pool player and want to add some great shots to your game, I highly recommend "The 99 Critical Shots in Pool."
The book is not without it's drawbacks. This is a 220 page book. Of that, 50 pages are devoted to The Official Rules and Glossary of Terms. An additional 25 pages skim the basics of shooting form, etc. That leaves only 145 pages for the meat of the book, the 99 critical shots. Of the 99 shots, 22 are devoted to break shots for straight pool. If, like me, you play only 8-ball and 9-ball, then this book should be called "The 77 Critical Shots in Pool" because you'll never use the other 22. So, for me, this 220 page book has only 107 useful pages.
The format of the shots section is great. Each shot includes a diagram of the whole table layout, a diagram of the cue ball showing exactly where to strike it to impart the draw, follow or English, and a text description of the shot. As others have pointed out, the text refers to a black ball (the object ball) and gray balls (all other balls), yet they are indistinguishable in the diagrams; they both look black. This is an annoyance, but does not keep you from understanding the author's intentions. Between the text description and the lines indicating the ball paths, I was always able to determine which ball was the object ball.
If I still had my own pool table, I would have this book sitting right next to it. I'd study a single shot in this book and then practice it until I had mastered it. Then, when I'd mastered that shot, I'd proceed to the next shot and so forth. That would be the most effective way to use the book. Unfortunately, I have to go to a pool hall to practice. I don't know about you, but I don't really want to be seen reading a book about pool at the pool hall. So I have to study several shots and then practice them there from memory. Obviously, there's no substitute for practice. This book shows you WHAT to practice.

Having told you that I only found 107 pages (77 shots) useful, you might get the impression that this book's not worth buying. Nothing could be further from the truth. Of those 77 shots, probably at least half were shots that I had either never even considered or had never fully mastered. You only have to add a few new shots to your game to make this book well worth the price. Buy it!

A valuable resource to students, educators, and parents

"The Secret Ghost: A Mystery with Distance and Measurement" is the third book in an outstanding Manga Math Mystery series and involves a "haunted" house where Sam and Michelle have moved to live with their dad. They receive help from Kung Fu friends Amy and Tom who help them use measuring tools to calculate distance, volume, and areas to enable them to solve the mystery of Michelle's secret ghost. Colorful Manga illustrations tell the story and keep interest high. Aside from teaching basic measuring and logical problem solving skills, "The Secret Ghost" contains some positive subtext suggestions, such as that children of different ethnicities can be closely related as well as good friends, and former bullies can become friends and heroes, and finally, children who are not ridiculed for having fears can be empowered to investigate and resolve their fears. "The Secret Ghost" will appeal to elementary and middle school age children, and will be a valuable resource to students, educators, and parents.

Bravo, two thumbs up!

I haven't been to a performance of this play, but I read the script after my son was required to read it for a college course. I think Deborah Brevoort has done an outstanding job of making important statements about human suffering and healing. I don't think this play was intended to study terrorism, but makes deep resonating observations about loss and grief/suffering, which are universal. I think she also makes points about how we can be so entrenched in our own losses that we fail to recognize the suffering of others. The resolution in this work revolves around a type of unplanned sharing...acts of kindness which produce a type of solidarity and aid the healing of both the "givers" and the "receivers." I think there is a great perception on the part of the author regarding several aspects of human nature/the human psyche. In my (humble) opinion, there is a spiritual side to this play which is never overtly stated, but inherent in the choice of material and its treatment. Ms. Brevoort is to be commended. I personally think she could well have written a short story or novella and reached a wider audience. It must be a powerful play when it is performed well, but will probably never get the attention it deserves. Bravo, Ms. Brevoort, you get two thumbs up from me!

Falling in Love with Brevoort

A friend recommended this author to me, and since reading this script, I have read as many more of hers as I can get my hands on. This is a lovely piece, written in a poetic style that compliments the subject matter. Brevoort is a restrained and intelligent writer, and this is a fantastic piece for theatres looking for a female-centric script. By the end I was bawling. It's lovely. It's moving. It should be produced more. I also really recommend her "Signs of Life", though you may have to order it through the Samuel French catalogue, which is really the only other place I've been able to track down her scripts. They're more expensive than on Amazon, unfortunately.

About the Author
Stephen Ross is presently the Franco Modigliani Professor of Finance and Economics at the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. One of the most widely published authors in finance and economics, Professor Ross is recognized for his work in developing the Arbitrage Pricing Theory and his substantial contributions to the discipline through his research in signaling, agency theory, option pricing, and the theory of the term structure of interest rates, among other topics. A past president of the American Finance Association, he currently serves as an associate editor of several academic and practitioner journals. He is a trustee of CalTech, a director of the College Retirement Equity Fund (CREF), and Freddie Mac. He is also the co-chairman of Roll and Ross Asset Management Corporation. Randoloph W. Westerfield is Dean of the Marshall School of Business at University of Southern California and holder of the Robert R. Dockson Dean's Chair of Business Administration. From 1988 to 1993, Professor Westerfield served as the chairman of the School's finance and business economics department and the Charles B. Thornton Professor of Finance. He came to USC from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he was the chairman of the finance department and member of the finance faculty for 20 years. His areas of expertise include corporate financial policy, investment management and analysis, mergers and acquisitions, and stock market price behavior. Professor Westerfield has served as a member of the Continental Bank trust committee, supervising all activities of the trust department. Stuningly bad book! A terrible Kindle execution also.

As other reviewers have noted, the book is a jumble. I can't find my way through chapters logically, let alone see the logical flow of the book as a whole. It claims to have electronic links to things like spreadsheets and videos...it does not. All the links are dead. The publisher's website promises tons of content, and there's virtually nothing, and what is there is just fluff, not of any real use.

And finally, the book is not updated in any meaningful way since the 8th edition (I compared it in the library). Literally all they did was tweak the number in the problem section so you don't get the same answers. Every word of the text is verbatim, except for some very minor changes (they refer to different baseball players' salaries, or sales of expensive art auction items). So they published a "new" edition not cause there's new information, or to update the content in keeping with the 2008-present recession, or anything else of academic merit. The changes are basically cosmetic, in order to sell more books. Putting out a new edition was not just unnecessary, it was evil.

As for the Kindle execution...first, no page numbers. All books of this sort need literal page numbers, so that kindle users can follow along with the rest of the class. then, they only let you use it on two devices. One of the beauties of Kindle books is that you can bounce from device to device; your phone, your iPad, your laptop, your desktop and home and work, your Kindle, the new Kindle you had to buy because the old one got stolen, the new Kindle you bought because the newer models just came out...you get my drift. NOT with this book! You're limited to two devices. TWO! Utterly ridiculous.

In sum, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. If you have to, plead to get a used copy of the 8th edition, you'll learn every bit as much. What might be missing can be found on the web. Teachers...if you must assign it to students, at least have the courtesy to let students us an older edition, since the 8th is exactly the same book.

watch the hours spin by and get nothing done!

My Gawd! I bought both this and the unleashed book for a class - a class where the instructor refused to teach us anything.
(which sux, but I'll leave that alone for now)

I have been programming for a heck of a long time, so I actually claim to know a few things...

One thing I know is that no other "language" than xaml is so whacked out in the way that if you "add something", your previous code starts f***ing up so badly.

Pretty much all the books will show you how to put in a piece of xaml. But that is not the issue. The issue is when you try to add some more code and bam! your stuff just got all blown up.

xaml is so screwed up that understanding the plumbing is not feasible unless you want to make it your life's journey. What is needed is syntax examples of combinations of xaml.

Trust me. You can't "think" your way through it. xaml is bad. And that is why all these books can't make you understand it or be good at it.

Bottom line: MS needs to re-write xaml.

There. I started out criticizing the book and then went to bashing xaml. Hey xaml users - how easy is it to learn how to make things that resemble real objects in life? How easy is it to understand someone else's code? Answer: it is not easy.

And so far, I have not found the book that makes it easy.

Flame me if you want, but you know I speak the TRUTH.

Just finished this monster of a book and have to say it is one of the books I not only enjoyed but will undoubtably be referring to constantly at work.

The Writer explains everything in WPF in detail, good step through on code examples with C# and XAML. His coding is clean, minimal, and excellently done.

I would have given this book 5 stars easily except a few peeves. It appeared to me the chapters were a bit out of sync and switched around from topics I thought should have been put closer together. Not a big deal, just made the reading flow a bit disjointed. My only other minor issue was the Writer was at times a bit too verbose, "too much detail" so to speak.

That said, I still highly recommend this book!

I highly recommend the book...

I have the first edition of this book (Pro WPF: Windows Presentation Foundation in .NET 3.0), so I was hesitant in buying this version. WPF 3.5 did not have major feature upgrades from 3.0. I am glad that I did buy it, but I can't really recommend doing so for other people with the .NET 3.0 version, only because there is not that much new material.

However, I highly recommend the book if you don't own the previous edition. I also highly recommend it even if you have the first one and you are like me and pretty much trashed my first edition copy. It has been through several storms and has a lot of notes and ink running all over it. So it is nice to have a new copy to beat the crap out of. I also like having the latest information I am using up to date.

Here is what is new in this release:
--Firefox support for XBAPs.
--Data binding support for LINQ.
--Data binding support for IDataErrorInfo.
--Support for placing interactive controls (such as buttons) inside a RichTextBox control.
--Support for placing 2-D elements on 3-D surfaces.
--An add-in model.

Matthew has added content for all the topics listed above.

Some of the highlights of the book I like:
--His in-depth coverage of printing.
--His Custom Elements chapter.
--The new chapter on Application Add-Ins.
--The chapter on using ClickOnce with WPF.
--Everything is gone into in depth. This is not a brush over the topic book.
--The usability of the code makes the book all that much more valuable.

The book focuses on WPF only. It has a few pages on LINQ, but that is about it as far as the rest of the .NET 3.5 framework goes. In other words, the book does not cover how to best use WPF in relationship to WCF, WF, or LINQ. This does not take anything away from the book because Matthew does not claim that the book does this. I only mention it because his ASP.NET 3.5 book does go into LINQ application integration.

The downloadable code is very well organized and is very usable.

I highly recommend this book to anyone getting into WPF with .NET 3.5.

Snow's classic Red Star Over China was a journalistic coup. Based on interviews with Mao Zedong and his followers, who were in hiding, cut off from Western observers for a decade, his bestseller revealed that Chinese Communism was a chohesive popular movement, not a ragtag army of bandits. But Snow (1905-1972), the adventurous reporter from Kansas City, Miss., and stowaway to the Far East, told Americans things they did not want to hear. The Cold War public ignored his measured portrayal of a protectionist Soviet Union crippled by WW II and not bent on spreading communism. During the McCarthy witch-hunt period, this romantic idealist, who once called Mao an agrarian democrat, was blamed for misleading Americans. Even as Snow's political opinions matured, his message that China wanted closer ties with the U.S. went unheeded. Written by a journalist who worked in the U.S. Agency for International Development, this serviceable biography is as plainspoken as its down-to-earth subject. John Maxwell Hamilton is author or coauthor of five books, most recently Casanova Was a Book Lover: And Other Naked Truths and Provocative Curiosities about the Writing, Selling, and Reading of Books. He is dean and Hopkins P. Breazeale Foundation Professor of Journalism at Louisiana State University and a longtime commentator on Public Radio International's Marketplace.

"Snow" of China

"Edgar Snow: A Biography" by John Maxwell Hamilton was published by Indiana University Press in 1988, 343 pages hardcover. Having long ago digested one of the 1.6 million copies of Snow's "Red Star Over China," a classic and required reading for anyone trying to understand the founding of modern China, I was long overdue for digging into the background of this journalist that China still considers perhaps the only honest Western reporter and whom they reverently call "Big Snow."

So many of the better "China hand" reporters came from the U.S. Midwest-Plains region. Hamilton summarizes: "Snow distinguished himself from many Americans in recognizing that the United States enjoyed exceptional advantages that did not apply abroad. He did not believe that other countries could copy the United States any more than they should emulate the Soviet Union. China and others had to find their own way. But the belief that truth did not lie on one side of the river, as Snow liked to say, did not stop him from believing in American superiority in another way. The extraordinary conditions that gave rise to the United States, he thought, should also produce a people more tolerant than others.... But could it [United States] learn to help others prosper and to apply its ideals in such a way that other countries would rally around them? Could Americans come to understand other countries' perspectives, to anticipate their actions, to work together with them? Or would Americans only see the world through the prism of their hopes and fears, and try clumsily to impose their will unilaterally?...."

"Miracles are not forecast for tomorrow," Snow said. "Each generation is doomed to learn for itself that the new print cannot altogether obscure the underlying `old misunderstandings.'"

The need has never been greater for another Snow, another reporter with objective integrity to "tell it like it is" in China today. Snow died barely three days before Nixon's plane left Andrews Air Force Base for his historic first visit in Peking. Edgar Snow was a Missourian who was followed by the Kansas City Star, and whose final papers were archived at the University of Missouri at St. Louis.

Hamilton's biography is fair-handed and, unlike some biographies of him, is not politically biased. As China rises in economic prominence, the drumbeat of our anti-China press is ominous. We need more reporters in the mold of Snow.
